Every now and then, we see one or more Metal genres becoming "trendy". We have witnessed Nu Metal, Metalcore and other kinds of Metal hitting the mainstream big time. Is it my idea or has the old school sound (Thrash and Death Metal mostly) became somehow commercial?

What do you think the next "metallic" trend will be?

Death metal has gotten really trendy in the new deathcore scene (which universally blows across the board) and then those retro-thrash bands that like to pretend that it's still 1985. Most of the bands from that time progressed but these bands rehash the same ideas over and over. I'm looking at you Bonded By Blood.

I don't think it's bad newer bands are presenting ideas in honor of the original legends. I think that - at times - labels do exaggerate talkin' 'bout revival shit or something. And of course I like to listen to these new bands playing old-school stuff but wouldn't probably place 'em even one step below the originals.

I don't say it is bad or good, but what annoys me is that it either has to be totally "modern" or totally old school nowadays. Nothing in between…

And regarding Death Metal, I am not only talking about Deathcore and stuff. Just see bands like Evocation and Katalysator, books like "Swedish Death Metal" etc.

There are some that seem to add something of their own, like Lazarus AD and Evile, for example, and I give them a lot of credit and enjoy them for that. Nothing wrong with writing solid thrash, but if a band is just copying their idols instead of merely being influenced by them, they fail to have much of an impact on me

i can't bother with trends.
i can't even pinpoint them.

there's music i like and music i don't.

NOT interested in what other people listen to.
NOT interested in what bands the media promote.
NOT interested if one genre prevails over another one for a specific period of time.
NOT even interested in trying to explain to other people why something is wonderful or awful in my ears.

there's just music i like and music i don't.

(and by all means… fuck trends)

What I like with Metal is that it does not follow trends. But what makes a trend to be a trend? Because sometimes we consider something as trendy when many metalheads follow it or dig it. Is this right?

this is a vicious circle if you think a little more but it is a always a catchy subject to discuss. or should I say "trendy" subject….. :P

Well if you're an editor you should at least disagree with the part where he says that he is not even interested in explaining why he does or does not like something  :P
