'P.S.: As we speak, already announced names for the 2011 edition of 'UTH' fest include legendary US legions RUTHLESS, British NWOBHM monsters JAGUAR, America’s WHILEHEAVENWEPT, Dutch 80s cult metallers MARTYR, Swiss warriors EMERALD and Greek doomsters WISHDOOM'
copied from the UTH V second day live report.because i don't know any of the bands mentioned, could someone tell me which albums from these bands should i check?
RUTHLESS: American raw Power Metal with an evil attitude. Check their "Metal Without Mercy" EP (1984) by any means, while their only full-length "Discipline Of Steel" is not bad at all, too.
JAGUAR: one of the godfathers of Speed Metal. Their early couple of 7' singles ("Axe Crazy" and "Back Street Woman") and the "Power Games" debut are classics, I guess almost all songs will be off these NWOBHM masterpieces.
WHILE HEAVEN WEPT: Not familiar, sorry
MARTYR: they released two albums in the mid-80s ("For The Universe" and "Darkness At Time's Edge"), both are fine with a mysterious Heavy/Power Metal vibe. Their reunion "Fear" EP (2009) is more 'modern' but not bad.
EMERALD: 'True' melodic Power/Epic Metal from Switzerland. Swords, axes, warriors, myths…you know. A nice 'obscure' band, generally.
WISHDOOM: The "-doom" part is not my cup of tea in general….
"…My life is broke because my dreams were shattered,
For so very long nothing else mattered…"
I can talk about the other two… They are both usually tagged as Doom but I wouldn't call them straight Doom, if you know what I mean.
WISHDOOM - Epic Metal in the same style as bands like Holy Martyr, (early) Domine and Battleroar. They're new EP is great! But of course, I love Manowar/Bathory/Atlantean Kodex so that's a given.
WHILE HEAVEN WEPT - Epic Metal again, a bit more doomy and proggy, I suppose. They have an amazing new singer and Tom Phillips is one of the most emotional guitar-players I've heard lately. Their album from last year is amazing (the opening track is a huge epic track almost 16 minutes long!) and they even have a song («To Wander The Void») that's a kind of a tribute to Fates Warning (John Arch era). But their style is more somber and mournful.
As for the other bands, I agree with the manimal description. I'm not too sure about Jaguar, though. I wasn't there but their performance at the KIT III (from what we can see in the DVD) is kind of disappointing.
