Interview - Dimitriy Pavlovskiy (Majesty Of Revival)

Interview with Dimitriy Pavlovskiy from Majesty Of Revival
by YngwieViking at 05 February 2014, 9:41 PM

Recently, YngwieViking got to sit down with Dimitriy Pavlovskiy of MAJESTY OF REVIVAL to talk about the band’s new album, along with several other pointers that might find of interest, stay tuned for the conversation.

Hi Dimitry, First warm congratulations and thanks for taking time to answer to my questions. I think that the new album by “Iron Gods” is one of the highlights of the early 2014 , as a fan of your playing and Neo-Classical Metal in general, It was a real blast and uplifting experience…What will be your words to describe it ?

Hi, Cedric! Thanks for the nice words. I will be glad to talk to you!). Well… The new album is a step forward - a new material and a new label. Our sound became more fresh and aggressive! Although we do not stop looking to our own sound and keep moving on. During the recordings there was plenty of troubles - from illness of musicians to changes of the line-up. When the album was complete, we had a new line-up (which you can see now). But all this experience - wasn`t always enjoyable, but nonetheless I'm glad that we finally presented our new creation to the public.

Can you first tell us about you, your background as a musician… Your past or actual involvement in other bands.  I want to know everything…Go !

Since my childhood I grew up in a family of musicians. But until six years I did not like the sounds of piano, guitar or any other instrument. I demanded from the parents that they should have saved me from these sounds :) And sharply from six years I began to take an interest in music, especially the guitar and saxophone. As if something in me shifted dramatically and I started to be interested in everything to do with music. Saxophone was quite expensive so I chose the guitar. In seven years, I went to the music school, took guitar and drums lessons. In 12 years, I was the best guitarist in the Western Ukraine – was taking first places on competitions. I met my first group when I was 15 years old - I was playing drums there! We played a lot of heavy metal covers and one own song. In 17 years, my friends and I gathered a new art-prog rock band "In Submarine". At that time I had already participated in some local bands as session guitarist.

In 2009 I decided to drop all bands and create my own. So, probably in August of 2009… I created “Revival” band (in January 2011 it was renamed to Majesty Of Revival). At that time it included 3 musicians. We played everything - from jazz / fusion to thrash speed metal. We record one more demo album called "Torn". But that structure lasted about 4 months. In late 2010, drummer Vasily Irzhak contacted me and said that he was ready to play with me. Since then, the band has seen many changes. We have released a few demos, recorded 2 official albums… so you know story of the band ;)
In 2011, Transcarpathian keyboardist / painter joined the Majesty band and invited me to play parallel in his black metal project Grotesque Orchestra. We record one E.P. and one full-length album with G.O. Also at that time I joined Bloody Terror project.

In May 2011 I decided to record a solo album "Powersquad". In August 2011 the album was released in Ukraine (in the world - January 2012). In the autumn of 2013 I released my second solo album. Now I’m producing one big epic project, but now I can’t say more about that project.. :)

In my review for the superb & adventurous release titled “Iron Gods” , I wrote that the album unleash some first class Progressive Power Metal with strong Neo-Classical influences and Symphonic Metal elements, darker and heavier than your regular contestant…What is your feelings about this quote ?

First class? Well, thank you :) I think we're just playing heavy metal. All style tags and labels are hung by reviewers.

I also states that beside the specific Neo-Classical sound, your influences are numerous, ranging from Thrash to Cinematic, but the mood is definitively ranged in the intellectual music, setting toward sad atmospheres, dramatic & chaotic spirit, cold soundscapes… Again, please what is your feelings about this quote?

Every participant of Majesty Of Revival listens to their own music because of each different musical tastes. We listen to everything - from pop music to black metal. I listen to music in general. Just during the last 4-5 years, I'm in rock-metal music… I found it easier and more interesting to work with metal music than jazz or pop music. So, that it the reason why Majesty Of Revival's music is a little bit different and has many moods and sides.

I think that MAJESTY OF REVIVAL’s new release is a giant step forward, epic, exultant and fascinating but also demanding for the listener, do you have a method to write those great pieces ?

Usually I generate the main ideas. Then, I connect with my band mates and they suggest their corrections/ideas. I always hear the music in my head; always feel the flow of ideas. If the melody stays a long time in my head, then I realize - this idea is worth keeping. Then we are working on it in rehearsals. Personally, I'm not one of those who sit for hours sorting out riffs, writing them down, and then hardly coming up with melodies on them. It is very tiring, and by the same will not have that affect than when the beautiful melody climbs to your head. Only James Hetfield knows how to write a devastating riff and supplement it with a brilliant melody - that's the whole success of Metallica :)

Do you think that the high technical level, the complexity of some song structures or the Progressive parts in your music can be a block for some listeners, do you keep this aspect in mind while composing, or did you just get the inspiration flows!

I do not think that the technical aspects and some broken parts have barrier for listeners. Nowadays everyone wants to break the rhythm and add atmosphere for variegate material to lure new listeners and stand out from the masses. Progressive music is really interesting - if certainly there is not only simply broken riffs! If there are contrasting tones, change of the atmosphere and mood.

I make the music that plays in my head, if we're talking about my solo works. If we are talking about the band - everything that I come up is complemented by band mates. We want to create something special that will force to think about something that was going on in the song. The main thing that creativity of the favorite band gives energy to life, gladdens and in some ways educates – because the Art should bring in person some of the values and culture.

Can you introduce to us the new musicians? Tell us especially about your dual lead singer’s related choice?

Well… You know, when we recorded the first demo, Olexa Dynnyk was singing in the band. But before recording the first album he disappeared. I could not find him anywhere. Later I found out that he did not want to sing with us. Then Ґ‎rotesk (former Majesty Of Revival keyboardist / Grotesque Orchestra founder) advised to talk with Max Morton. Max said that he knows a great singer - Konstantine. I contacted Kostya and he agreed to join the band.

During the recording of the second album I met Olexa on a concert, where I participated - Ukrainian grand tribute to Pink Floyd. Turned out he was invited there too. He asked me: "What’s about your band?" I said, "We record the second album - next week we start recording vocals". He said: "OK, I'll join you on Monday." Although I told him that we have a great singer Konstantine - but he insisted: "I want to work with you". Since Konstantine lives 900 kilometers from Uzhgorod, it's hard for us to rehearse with him. So, we decided that we will have two singers. Then the band joined my fiance Nelly - she participated at few gigs as a backing singer. After recording the second album, we decided to keep Nelly in the band as official member. She has a nice clean voice and great growling. Currently, we have allocated several solo roles for Nelly, and in the next album, I think she will make some solo parts.

During the recording of "Iron Gods" a large number of musicians visited the band. After recording the album, in the spring of 2013 the band got left without a drummer and bassist. A week later I met one of the founders of the Majesty Of Revival - Vasiliy Irzhak, and he said that he was ready to rejoin the band since he is completely healthy.
Than Nelly found bass-player Vasiliy Dovganych - when he came to the audition we were just shocked. He is a great musician, but a complex person. Later he admitted that he started to play bass just one month ago, and in general - he is an accordionist! :) Achieve such results on bass guitar per month … one word – Talent!

The Playing level is pretty elevated, how do recruit your fellows musicians?

I haven't recruited bandmates. They want to develop. I demand just to play, no more. They develop themselves, bring their ideas - they are interested in making music. We all understand that to succeed not only in Ukraine, but also in the whole world, we must be professionals.

Where are you coming from, as far as guitar influences are concerned? Tell us about your training and your day by day practicing routine?

As I said, I grew up in a family of musicians. At the age of 6, I began to show interest in music, especially in the guitar … I was one of the best guitarists of the Western Ukraine. I had a great teacher and mentor. In 12 years, I began to be trained on the drum set. Teachers in the College of Music were struggling for me - they wanted me to study the guitar and drums parallel. Then I played in two bands on the drums. Also you can hear my drumming on my first solo album.

Up to 15 years I have been training 5-7 hours a day on average. From 15 years old I started to be interested in rock music not only as entertainment, but as a main occupation. I started to move from classical to rock music career. Then I became a little less engaged. Currently I'm training just before the gigs, 3-5 hours a day. I start a day from scales, arpeggios. Then I play some Majesty stuff, work on hard solos, practice them. I was influenced by guitarists such as Stevie Ray, Ritchie Blackmore, Phillip Campbell, Jeff Waters, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Romeo, Luca Turilli, Frank Gambale, Paul Gilbert, Jarno Keskinen.

Which are the new guitarists that impressed you lately?

I think this guys are pretty interesting: Mattias Eklundh, Jan Zehrfeld , Tosin Abasi, Matias Kupiainen.

You seems to take the meaning of the lyrics quite seriously, can you tell us more about the pessimistic & dystopian futuristic themes displayed in the letters?

We tried to write lyrics with philosophical meaning. In Majesty Of Revival tracks you will never hear the stories about brave warriors, great campaigns – for this you have Rhapsody. We write songs about life, about emotions, about the inner world … about dreams, sometimes even about simple love. The new album is more aggressive than its predecessor - we had a lot of problems during the recording. All the anger displayed on the lyrics. Lyrics and music are written due to our mood. I can not write a cheerful track when I feel bad. So as I can’t work on a gloomy track when I have a good mood.

As a band from Ukraine, what do you think about the Metal scene in your country? Do you feel that your music reveal that specific Balkan feel?

Music business in Ukraine is on level zero. If someone is producing, then no one needs it. There are some good bands we have in Ukraine. But only few of them: the main part it is a copy of anything.

Are there new undergrounds bands that we have to reckon with in the next years?
Maybe some new acts that you want to produce by Yourself?

Yes. We have a cool local band “Johnny Rides”. They play Brit-rock. Very solid songwriting. Also Konstantin's band Sunrise is perfect Power Metal band with professional sound…

Actually I'm not a brilliant producer. I am a composer, mainly. I want to produce only those projects, where I play. I think that I'm not such a big professional to produce anyone else. According to that each musician must make music himself. Producer rivet on all cliches - a musician expresses his "I", his visions and his attitude. His work is clean without producer. Generally, as Ritchie Blackmore said: "the purest musician - is the one who is sitting on a cart plays a lute."

Did you plan on touring in Europe?

Yes, we planned that. Now we are discussing it with our booking/tour agency. We have interesting proposals. So, check out news on our FB, Twitter, YT and other pages.

What do you think of the state of the market in 2014! What is your opinion concerning digital downloading legal and illegal?

On the one hand illegal downloading is killing music business. Only that band which started playing before 2000 can earn some money. For the new bands it is almost unreal. Labels require money from the bands - they do not believe that the new trash\\power metal or any other band can succeed. They make money on musicians, don’t give them freedom to play and live.

On the other hand the Nuclear Blast or Universal Music labels get into the charts, selling a lot of albums, albums melts gold - which means that people need music and they buy the albums. Then the problem is within the labels and producers. They are producing not those who need it. And some labels are just doing their job bad on the promotion of the project. Generally producers, managers - they only want money. They do not care what happens in the soul of the musician. They will produce only what they can sell. But in some ways the Internet and illegal downloading sometimes helps to unwind the unknown bands - one person bought the CD, poured it on site and 1,000 people have heard that unknown group. Hard to say how these your internets can affect to the music business….

Actually music to the 20th century was clean. There were no managers. Music was written from the souls. And now everyone wants to write something new that no one heard before. Everybody wants to be famous and have a lot of money with the help of music. And this kind of music has no soul…

Tell us what we have to expect from your side in the future to come?

Several new releases with projects in which I participate. With Majesty Of Revival we have prepared a few surprises for the fans. Well as I hope we will have concerts abroad - in Ukraine we have enough gigs :)

What is the last CD you have bought

Nostradameus “Illusion Parade” and Silent Voices “Reveal The Change”. Also I want to buy Japan version of NOSTRADAMEUS  - “Words of nostradameus”.
