Interview - Dmitriy Mukjamedov (Mushroom Cloud)

Interview with Dmitriy Mukjamedov from Mushroom Cloud
by Andrija "TheIslander" Petrovic at 23 October 2013, 11:47 AM

Danish Thrash trio MUSHROOM CLOUD have attracted fans with both their immense Melodic Metal and old school sound and also with their creative name. Through much hard work, their first full-length album “In Mad Minute” is finally finished and has impressed critics with its energetic delivery. Drummer and co-founder Dmitry Mukjamedov talks to TheIslander about sharing a band name with a Japanese indie pop artist, upcoming live shows, and the alarming two weeks that they had to put the album together.

Hello there Dmitriy, before we start, I want to thank you for taking the time to have this interview for Metal Temple.

Hello there! And no problem.

Your first full length album In Mad Minute is coming out.  What can you share about its making and musical perception in your eyes?

In Mad Minute is the result of some hard years of creation! It consist of songs that, in their own way, represent MUSHROOM CLOUD and what we are about. There is a bit of everything, from slow, fast, melodic to aggressive. Some of the songs were rewritten from our latest EP and have existed for a couple of years.

How would you describe the sound of In Mad Minute and MUSHROOM CLOUD?

I would describe it as Melodic Thrash Death Metal, with a touch of old school influence, especially in the guitar leads.

Speaking of the album, why In Mad Minute? Is there some special meaning behind the album title, or did it just sound good?

The album title has a couple of meanings to it.  For me personally, In Mad Minute kind of describes the whole process of recording the album. We only had 2 weeks to get the whole album recorded in Antfarm Studio with Tue Madsen and I was tracking a lot of guitars! With all the preparation that went into getting ready for the recording, I have never been so busy! So that is the way I look at it. A long mad minute of recording!

While we`re at it, who came up with the band name? And are you aware that there is a Japanese acoustic indie singer carrying the same name, and also an American psychedelic rock band that goes under the name of MUSHROOM CLOUD?

The band name was something I suggested. I got it from a CRADLE OF FILTH song. We thought that the name would already be taken, so we went online to check if we could find any other bands. We were only looking for Metal bands, so we kinda missed the whole Japanese singer-songwriter thing. We hope we can live peacefully with our Japanese friends. Like for example, there are two bands named SHINING who live a lot closer together (Norway and Sweden), than we do to Japan. So it is possible, so hopefully we won’t have any problems with that.

When you started a band, did you already have the idea of creating a Thrash / Death Metal band, or did it just happen along the way?

Well, the idea was always to make Melodic Metal music, so you could say it was planned. For me Metal is many things, not just aggressive music. I have always been a big fan of the Göteborg scene in Sweden and all the great bands that come from there.

How does the writing process develop for you guys? One does the lyrics, other the music, or you do it all together?

I prepare all the guitar parts at home and then bring them to the band. We then put it together in the practice space. Morten, our singer does all the lyrics. We first add the drums and guitars together, then start working on the vocals.

Inspiration comes from all kinds of different places. Where your muses can be found?

I draw inspiration from all kinds of arts. Being it tattoos, paintings, theater. All of this inspires the music I write in some way or another.

Who are the people from the music world you most admire, and who are those that got you inspired to create a band of your own?

Well there is a bunch of musicians that have inspired me. To name a few. Alexi Laiho, Zakk Wylde, Marty Friedman, Gary Moore, the list goes on!

Why did you choose to play the guitar and what’s the first song you ever learned to play?

I always liked the sound of guitar strings so I was hooked on guitar straight away. I started playing classical guitar and did a lot of fingerstyle guitar playing at the beginning. When I started to play guitar I was never interested in playing other people’s music, I wanted to make music of my own. I never learned to play guitar through covers, so when I began to learn some covers I had already been playing for a few years.

What is the most unexpected album that can be found in your music library?

I listen to a lot of different music, but the most unexpected must be a band named UNTER NULL. Check it out for yourself!

The first concert you`ve ever been to is…?

The first concert I went to was Yngwie Malmsteen at Train in Aarhus, where we come from.

Best live album ever?

Favorite live album must be Children of Bodom Tokyo Warhearts.

Speaking of live playing, you guys did a lot of live shows. Where can your fans can expect you to play next?

We hope to do a lot of shows for this album. Our next show will probably be here in Denmark somewhere. We also hope to be able to play outside of Denmark in the future and spread the name of MUSHROOM CLOUD.

This would be all, I guess. Thanks again for taking the time to answer these questions. I wish you all the best in your further career.
