5th Avenue - It's Been a Long Way

5th Avenue
It's Been a Long Way

5th Avenue hail from Hamburg, Germany. The five-piece band recently released “It’s Been a Long Way” earlier this year, their first album since 1994. The sound of the album falls between 90’s alt-rock and 80’s rock ballads. It gives the impression that 5th Avenue has made no attempt to modernize their sound since their moderate success in ’94 with their single “Luka”, a cover of the well known Suzanne Vega song.

The album starts hard with “Civilized in Harmony” but it quickly loses momentum. Track two: Legend of a Postman is a quirky song dealing with the familiar porno plotline of “man with a mundane job somehow gets laid with double-entendres about his package.” It’s a fun party track that I could see bands like Bowling for Soup and The Vandals singing about. The last three tracks gradually slow down into ballad territory, and the track Satellite is clearly influenced by Guns N’ Roses. The slow build of the guitars to slow, emotional solos and there are times when I caught the vocalist using a pinch of Axl Rose’s vibrato.

If you are into hair metal or slow alt-rock this might be worth checking out, but if you are want to take a harder route I would steer clear of 5th Avenue.
