A Broken Design - Another Day In Hell (Reissue)

A Broken Design
Another Day In Hell (Reissue)
by "Metal Mark" Garcia at 24 December 2021, 9:10 AM

Even using some depiction that states that one particular musical genre belongs to a country and/or region, today such references makes no sense anymore. Today, it’s easy to hear a musical genre that was exclusively from the USA, England or any other in an unexpected country. And one very good example is this reissue for “Another Day in Hell”, of the Maltese quartet A BROKEN DESIGN.

Their music is a form of Stoner/Groove Metal/Rock similar to that one explored by names as C.O.C. (on “Deliverance” age) and SOUNDGARDEN in the early years of the 90’s, but with very accessible melodies in many moments (as can be heard on “Curse of May”). And although they have the same abrasive and greasy approach, their songs bear a great musical accessibility as well. And it’s really a great experience to hear this release (even being a reissue, what means that we all lost an opportunity before). Their sonority is, as said above, greasy and abrasive, but it was conceived to be clean and defined, to improve the understanding of what they’re doing. And it’s a wise and fine choice that every band of the genre must have (because some seems to think that a filthy and distorted sonority is an exigency of the genre). And that makes their work sounds different from many.

They bring an excellent work on their songs, as can be heard on “Landslide” (a brutal and massive weight comes from the guitar riffs, filled with nasty distortion, but creating charming Groove melodies), “Another Day in Hell” (another very good set of accessible melodies, and a great work from bass guitar and drums, for the rhythm is heavy as Hell), “Curse of May” (an accessible song, with the right balance between filthy, weight and melodies, and that shows very good vocals and chorus), and the deeper and massive weight of “Too Far Gone” (a hooking song filled with excellent melodies), and these are the best ones.

For now, this reissue of “Another Day in Hell” is justified by itself. And let’s hope we can hear something new from A BROKEN DESIGN soon.
