A Perfect Day - Self-Titled

A Perfect Day
Self-Titled
by YngwieViking at 07 December 2012, 4:15 PM

Once or twice in a year, the prolific Italians from Frontiers Records break the monthly routine, by releasing an unexpected album like the extraordinary FURYON in early March, they do reiterate the trick with A PERFECT DAY’s self-titled album. In fact this album isn’t as heavier / sharper as FURYON’s “Gravitas” but it’s quite unexpected, way more adventurous and modernized than the typical safe AOR material provided regularly by Frontiers. This is still in a utterly melodic direction but with a more contemporary feel and some unanticipated influences as they embraced the whole Metal spectrum from SHINEDOWN to DOKKEN, to FREAK OF NATURE from CREED and back to ALICE IN CHAINS.I know, it seems weird but it’s very harsh task to find comparisons.

The background of the musicians involved in A PERFECT DAY, isn’t traditional either, as the trio was involved in a moment or another in the line-up of the famous speed / melodic Power Metal band LABYRINTH, but here there are no hints of HELLOWEEN or STRATOVARIUS but a more mature Hard Rock highly inspired and perfectly executed by the way so different than the common picture of the Spaghetti Metal. The evident strength of this band is hiding in the clever songwriting but even more in the absolute accurate & impeccable vocal performance of Mr. Roberto Tiranti, in the same time powerful but also always natural and even, if it’s most of the time really high pitched, it never seems forced.

The readers that knows a little bit of Tiranti (aka Rob Tyrant) career story surely already noticed that way before joining Andrea Cantarelli & Olaf Thorsen (VISION DIVINE) in LABYRINTH, he was a member of VANEXA (reunited in 2009) and later in 2005, Tiranti also appears as the lead singer for HEADRUSH with Alex DeRosso on lead guitars (ex-LA ROX / ex-DARK LORD / SHADOWS FADE / PERFECT WORLD / FAITHSEDGE) a band that clearly belong to the Melodic Rock world. But concerning the two other members, this change of style is more surprising both where indeed classified in the Power Metal musicians genre. One of them is Andrea Cantarelli, the guitar player / composer being the mastermind behind LABYRINTH, the other member of the Power trio Mr. Alessandro Bissa (ex-MASTERCASTLE/ ex-ATHLANTIS) is also the drummer of VISION DIVINE (their last album “Destination Set to Nowhere” is hugely recommended).

The musical aptitudes are only matched by their strong commitments, and this album doesn’t sound like a one shot project. I’m truly convinced that they could surprise a lot of people with this kind of music which is smart but also flow easily. The best tracks of the whole album are “Silent Scream”, “Long Road to Ruin”, “Under the Same Sun” and “Another Perfect Day” but you can’t hardly find an average track in this perfect sounding recording, hats off for the technical end.

Once again Frontiers Records show to the incredulous world how they have great ears for Metal music in general and not only tagged AOR. PS: The Japanese edition contains the track “Now And Forever” (acoustic version).
