A Transylvanian Funeral - Gorgos Goetia

A Transylvanian Funeral
Gorgos Goetia
by Spyros Stasis at 18 April 2013, 1:45 PM

New full length by old school Black Metallers A TRANSYLVANIAN FUNERAL is here. Before you listen to this album you just need to ask yourself if you like the Black Metal scene of the 90s. If the answer to that is yes, and you cannot live without the repetitive BURZUM-esque riffing, the early DARKTHRONE production and if your favorite bands had been influenced by the first three BATHORY albums (yup, only the very first three) then go forth and listen to A TRANSYLVANIAN FUNERAL.

Because that is what “Gorgos Goetia” basically is: a tribute to old school Black Metal. The production here is quite poor but at least it manages to retain the ambience that the band’s mastermind, Sleepwalker, was probably looking for anyway. The long repetitive eerie riffs are the bread and butter of the album, followed by fast drumming and the typical Black Metal vocals, a few samples in places, like in “Burning Astral Hunger”, the inclusion of some clean vocals, for instance in “The Supreme Rite of Transmutation” (although I personally prefer his extreme vocals a bit more), the clean parts in the beginning of “Percival In Black Armour” and the generally mystic lyrical concept of the album are adding a bit more to this release.

On the negative side, I thought that the album is a bit too long for what is offering and it does not manage to keep your attention throughout, and although some of the riffs are quite nicely composed and used, for instance in “Moonchild”, they are not, in the end of the day anything really new.

But nonetheless, tracks like “Hymn To A Gorgon” are proof that A TRANSYLVANIAN FUNERAL does know how to craft Black Metal songs with great riffs and ambiance that retain that old school vibe.
