Affection - Remnants

Affection
Remnants

Coming all the way from Helsinki Finland, AFFECTION graces us with their album “Remnants.” Released on January 21, 2022, each and every single track has mind-blowing powerful guitar riffs and power chords. It’s truly the representation of modern/alternative metal. The album really gives you a feeling that no matter what happens in life, you have yourself to get through it all. In the end, you’ll come back stronger. Definitely, an album for all the people out there struggling with the hardships in life.

Although, I have to be quite critical of Andy H.C’s vocals. The man can sing, and it's super powerful but doesn't really fit the music. He has no range to give more emotions, be it angst or any other feeling. It’s monotonous throughout the whole album. If it wasn’t for the amazing metal vibes from the guitar, bass and drums I wouldn’t have been able to get through the album.

Placing the critical aside. I have two tracks that really got the metal-head creature out of me. “Transformation,” the 5th track of the album, and one that really stood out. I noticed I have a strange attraction to metamorphosis and transformation from werewolves to sirens calling out to their victims. Though, pretty sure transformation in this song isn’t into some creature but someone transforming into becoming a better person. The song starts off with a heartbeat followed by a guitar. It gives a feeling that something will happen or a decision will be made. For a moment there is silence, then a man's voice whispers followed by a powerful drum and guitar combo. I can say that Andy H.C’s suits this particular song. The build-up in this song is mosh-worthy!

Man in the Shadow,” the first track on the album, starts off with a man's voice talking, keeping it mysterious. If any of you have heard of Anonymous, that is pretty much what the vocal sounds like. This song gives me the creeps, and just because it does that, I love it. I literally feel someone is there in the room, following me and hiding in the shadows. If you wear headphones while listening the voice moves from left to right, which gives it even more of a disturbing feeling. A slow drum and cymbal come into the song as the voice continues talking. After all the creeping mood a vicious powerful guitar and drum beat slashes through the track.

Overall, I didn’t get anything super special from listening to AFFECTION, but perhaps if Andy H.C gets some lessons to have more range in his voice, things can fit better. I mean M.Shadows from AVENGED SEVENFOLD took some singing lessons and look at them now. They are more metal than ever! Either way, “Remnants” is AFFECTION’s first album, and I'm positive things will look up.
