Alcest - Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde (CD)

Alcest
Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde
by Yiannis Doukas at 22 December 2007, 2:47 PM

The first band I thought of when I listened to this album was FLEURETY. ALCEST's, music guided by Neige, has a main purpose in viewing the creation of specific emotions, the traveling to the land of beyond reason, the ground where the trees of nostalgia are planted. The beginning of this one-man band had a different face, more of Black Metal music if you hear the Tristesse Hivernale demo backing 2001. After that Neige decided to change his musical paths, exploring ethereal regions that exist in imaginations of a tale-narrator's mind.
A simple description of what is going around here could be the marriage of Black Metal riffing a la EMPYRIUM, AGALLOCH or OCTOBER FALLS with fairish vocals, calming waterish drumming. The music has nothing to do with Black Metal but you can easily see that its composer surely is listening to thus music; note also the Neige is also a member of  PESTE NOIRE a very good and different I could say Black Metal horde from France. Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde has a dispersion of acoustic relaxing guitars and a female voice like you are close to a Nereid. Everything is colored white, the color of brightness, of happiness.
Did the album's music achieve its purposes? I believe the answer is positive. As you enter this realm your memories will travel back to your childhood. That's because then existed purity, and real feelings in your soul. This music is like a tribute to these emotions plus the nice artwork reminds it. It's not music for listening in a way like, I'll sit on my chair and I'll enjoy it. I view it more like a substratum creating a wall above it your soul can paint images based on white. The songs don't follow any specific base or structure making them dream-like soundtrack for the place that you had built when you were child. This is the way that this band must be viewed otherwise you'll die from boredom.
Memories is the key here, together with something that has been lost years ago for the most of us, unfortunately. Don't expect anything Metal, or headbanging joy, because you will be 100% disappointed. The gate of fairy-land has opened. Do you dare to come in?
