Alter Bridge - The Last Hero

Alter Bridge
The Last Hero
by Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia at 30 October 2016, 10:21 AM

Well, the Alternative Rock scene from the 90s gave birth to some good names, or was the starting point of some good bands. No, I don’t mean that it all was a time loss or something astonishing, just commenting on the facts. One name that is really good that came as a consequence from those times is ALTER BRIDGE, a quartet that arose from the ashes of CREED, which gained great appraise from the public and media for their works, and that now release their newest album, “The Last Hero.” The quartet is again doing that same musical formula from before: a mix between good catchy melodies, some energy, and care with the whole musical aesthetics of each song of the album. This is good, because it is really charming and musically accessible, but with the right dose of musical aggressiveness and weight. I can’t say that their musical work is based upon new ideas, but it is really good.

Michael "Elvis" Baskette did the production, mixing, string arrangements, and played the keyboards parts on “The Last Hero.” Jef Moll made the sound engineering and digital editing, and Ted Jensen did the mastering. So, the sound quality is really amazing, clear (so you will hear and comprehend what they are doing and what the band wants from their music) and with the essential aggressive touch that a band in this way must have. Daniel Tremonti created a fine cover as well.

The album is very good, with some great moments, and the best songs are: “Show Me a Leader” with its nasty and melodic tempos and very good guitars; the abrasive weight on guitar parts of “The Writing on the Wall” (many catchy moments here as well); the heavy grasp of the energetic “The Other Side” (very good vocals again); the charming melodies of the vocals on “My Champion” (along with very good guitar solos) and on “Losing Patience”; the heavy parts of bass guitar and drums shown on “Crows on a Wire”; the musical accessibility of the tender “Twilight”; and the very good guitars and vocals on the intense melodies of “The Last Hero”. And the deluxe version of the album has a very good bonus track, “The Last of Our Kind”, filled with bitter and heavy moments. “The Last Hero” could not be their best album, nor the greatest one of the year, but shows that ALTER BRIDGE is still moving forward.
