Amaltheia – Amaltheia

Amaltheia
Amaltheia

Listening to the self-titled album from AMALTHIA you have to think, “You can’t keep an evil thing down.” The foursome formed in 2019 and unleashed their demo that same year. With the advent of the year of our plaque, Akmanos (drums) had to retrench in Greece while the rest of the members dispersed across the UK. Despite the obstacles, they were able to manage separate recordings which were then reamped, mixed, and mastered in BST Studios and released on March 11, 2022 via Godz ov War Productions.

AMALTHIA is a Black Metal band out of . . . well, all over. They have a true international presence with members from the UK, Greece, and Canada. Their music is artful and well-crafted. While discordant and raw, it doesn’t adhere to worn-out tropes or stale gimmicks. There are enough twists and turns throughout the six tracks to keep you guessing. There is a rampage in the middle of “Fall” that comes on like death by db; several movements of Doom-infused funeral marches; shed loads of acid-seared riffs only matched by Iconochasm’s scathing vocals; and lyrics torn from a forbidden book in the basement of a dead man’s cabin. And the production values are excellent, delivering separation and saturation in equal measures—meaning you get the right mix at the right time.

Best tracks are hard to single out as there are no clunkers to contrast them against. My favorite tracks are “Pyre” for its bending flourishes and crushing drops; “Fall” for its intro that sounds like a spy movie soundtrack with Death sensibilities and, of course, the aforementioned break that will set off car alarms in neighboring municipalities; and “Oblivion” for its riffage that will cut through tungsten. Also, the build from about 2:30 through 4:30 is next to perfect and then the movement from 5:30 thru the end happens and you have to redefine your definition of perfection.

The artwork by Maximos Manolis is classic—melding social commentary in a dark aesthetic. The logo is also evocative and will draw you in like that thing in the well of “The Color Out of Space.” Just saying, don’t stare too long. Clocking out at just over 33 minutes, this self-titled debut from AMALTHEIA is over much too soon, but we’ll take what we can get. Fans of Black and Death will love this album. Appropriately priced, btw, at € 6.66 on bandcamp.
