ANNOMINUS is a heavy metal band from Odense, Denmark that blends dissonant riffs with stellar melodies, drawing influence from
GOJIRA and
MASTODON. The group formed in 2009 and two years later released their debut EP,
"Vashta Nerada." After touring with bands such as
AMORPHIS, in 2014 the band released their debut full length,
"End of Atonement," a forty minute blend of hard rock and heavy metal that received mixed reviews.
"The Architect" is a concept album about how "we, as humans, can become discouraged by the world we live in," and is a similar mixture of elements. The album opens with a hardcore groove and clean vocals on
"Distinctive," sprinkled with dissonant passages and a melodic chorus.
"Submertia" is a slow burning, emotional release, containing more dissonant riffage and vocals almost screaming during the chorus.
"Through Perdition" opens with a tapped guitar riff that clearly shows the
GOJIRA influence, the slower, grooves further showing this – all the while, never compromising the alternative rock feel to their overall sound.
"Logos" shows off the technical prowess of drummer Mathias Wahl behind sonically charged guitar riffage that fleshes out the
MASTODON influence.
"Cubic" is a hard-hitting six minute track that has screamed vocals that can only remind this reviewer of
Jens Kidman of
MESHUGGAH – fierce, high pitched, robotic screams that have one wondering what this band would sound like if such a vocal style was employed more often. The closing track of the album,
"Audient Void" is a slow building descent into dissonance, with more
MASTODON-esque guitars riffs and screamed vocals, occasionally revisiting Old Maid Melody.
On its own,
ANNOMINUS is a veritable hard rock/metal band that has a more accessible approach to the kinds of elements being laid out. This writer was expecting a little bit more to be brought to the table upon reading the words: "For fans of
GOJIRA and
MASTODON."
