Apathy Noir - The Shipbreaker's Song

Apathy Noir
The Shipbreaker's Song
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 30 October 2020, 1:58 PM

APATHY NOIR formed in Sweden in 2003. Originally called APATHY, they changed their band name due to legal issues in 2016. I believe what we have here are two advanced singles from their firth forthcoming album, which is untitled at the moment. “The Shipbreakers’s Song” is the first of the two singles. It opens with clean guitars and a melancholy feeling. Soft, clean vocals tell a story, while dual harmonic lead guitars enter into the picture. From there, harsh vocals take over. Then, the sound drops back to just clean guitars and vocals. The constant push and pull of the two styles is a feature on the album for sure.

The second and final track, “The Sunken Place” opens with a slow riff that begins to descend downwards a bit. It features harsh vocals and some harmonic guitar work. About mid-way in, some hopeful clean vocal chants mix in with the harsh vocals, creating this duality in the song. Drums roll on, in double time, while the harsh vocals take over. Some light piano notes also accompany the guitars. It then drops to just piano before picking back up and finishing on the starting tones.

Overall, it’s hard to gauge an album based on just two tracks, but I think I get the sense of what the band and album is about. I like the constant push and pull of the two main elements of their music…the harshness and the beauty if you will. The piano notes are also nicely done. They created a landscape of desolation that you just don’t want to visit, because it would get lodged in your dreams for eternity. I will look forward to hearing the entire album or EP when it’s released, and any fan of Doom Metal will find this to their liking.
