Arcane Tales - Steel, Fire and Magic Award winner

Arcane Tales
Steel, Fire and Magic
by Kevin Lewis at 23 May 2022, 2:50 PM

ARCANE TALES is a one-man band hailing from Italy. Working heavily in the Symphonic, Power Metal arena, Luigi Soranno writes and plays all parts of this epic tale. Influenced by fantasy, these are tales of heroes doing what heroes do, journeying around the world to save the day. “Steel, Fire and Magic” was released via Broken Bones Records on March 15, 2022.

The disc opens with a short instrumental of epic, almost movie score style music, setting the stage for the rest of the record. Airy strings and ambient vocalizations and pounding drums tribal drums give the title of “Ethereal Skies” a sound that befits the name.

This leads into “Essence of Divine,” another epic song with a sound that makes you think of the journey the hero must now be on, especially with the spinet piano tones after the guitar solo. That gives a bit of a medieval feel to the track. “Forest Of Ice” adds some seriously neo-classical elements in for an even broader sound. The tones and textures ARCANE TALES achieve is pretty impressive.

Wings Of the Storm” is a pretty cool, fast-paced rocker that shifts speeds slightly in places. The drums stand out on this track. Those are Power Metal drums through and through. The guitar work is really nice, and the bass is solid, but the drums steal the show. The rhythm section is the prominent piece on “The Ambush.” There is always something that stands out in each of the songs. The variety is pretty awesome. It’s not the same thing every time.

The title track, “Steel, Fire and Magic,” is the seven plus minute epic anthem for this Power Metal album. True power metal requires a song of this caliber. It needs Neo-Classical, Power, and Progressive Metal elements to set it apart from the rest of the album, and this track succeeds in doing that. The guitars are on fire and the rhythm is bombastic, easily the most exciting track on the disc.

This is a very stock-standard type of Power Metal album done with a lot of flair and finesse. Luigi is a stunning talent. He has put out an excellent record that has a lot of depth and emotion. Hitting all the wickets, he creates a power metal album worthy of the name and ready for the stage. Let’s hope he can get a killer group of musicians recruited and take this on the road at some point.
