Archgoat - The Apocalyptic Triumphator

Archgoat
The Apocalyptic Triumphator
by Marcos “Big Daddy” Garcia at 05 January 2015, 9:26 PM

Well, it’s nothing new to all people that Ol’ Big Daddy here, loves Metal in all genres and with sonorities from past, present and future. I propose always that the new bands and forms of play Metal can get along with old ones, but to these last ones, it’s demanded to put something of them in the work, to not sound like a clone or, in the worst cases, to sound like making plagiarism from older bands (like many we see in those days, calling themselves “old school” something). And the Finnish trio ARCHGOAT is a fine example of an old band that preserves their musical identity for past 25 years of existence, and the coronation for this date is the release of “The Apocalyptic Triumphator”, their new album.

They are from the same school from bands like BEHERIT, BLASPHEMY and GRAND BELIAL’S KEY, those ones with a dirty and pretty simple sound, but being this way, the keep a certain magic on it, the same one that made great classics like SARCÓFAGO’s “I.N.R.I.”, BEHERIT’s “Drowning Down the Moon” and BLASPHEMY’s “Gods of War” loved into underground extreme Metal scene. And they follow the same idea, with guttural vocals (instead harsh and high pitched ones), pretty simple and aggressive guitars, and fast and heavy (and pretty simple) rhythmic kitchen, and some keyboards just to create oppressive and darkened touches here and there. But don’t get the wrong idea: being this way is the reason for they sound so good.

The sound quality is extremely raw. But to an old band like them, it’s the real thing, for this quality is what they need to do things the way they want. But don’t be so reckless: you can understand what they’re playing.

Their best songs: “Nuns, Cunts and Darkness” (these guttural vocals are very good, indeed, in a powerful and fast song), the rude and raw “The Apocalyptic Triumphator”, the slower and oppressive “Grand Luciferian Theophany” (a slow song, seeming like a funeral hymn into a cold storm, with excellent guitar riffs), the interesting “Sado-Magical Portal” (some pretty musical work is presented, especially in the rhythmic basis), and “Funeral Pyre of Trinity”.

This album is really very good.
