Arkana Fen - Reborn from the Ashes

Arkana Fen
Reborn from the Ashes
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 03 April 2019, 2:36 AM

Separated by vast lands and sea but united by their love of music ARKANA FEN is a Progressive/Symphonic Metal project comprising of Brazilian drummer and keyboardist Icaro Ravelo, New Zealand vocalist Ellie Kamphuis and Mexican guitarist and pianist Eric Aguilar. They initially connected through their respective online musical endeavors and bonded over their shared love of Symphonic metal. With a desire to challenge themselves and hone their craft, they decided to join forces and embark on an adventure of creating music together. March 30th, 2019 was the release date of their debut EP “Reborn from the Ashes.” “Reborn from the Ashes” is the first in a trilogy of EPs ARKANA FEN will release over the course of 2019. The trilogy will explore themes of facing ones inner demons and overcoming life's challenges. The EP contains three tracks.

Opening with “Fallen from Grace,” soft bells introduce the main melody of the song, leading to cello and other strings joining in. The main guitar riff then hits. It moves quickly, kind of like Power Metal. The vocals of Ellie Kamphuis are both charming and calming, and the Symphonic elements build gently in the background. She has no trouble negotiating in the upper ranges of her voice. Musically, it’s in the vein of NIGHTWISH or DELAIN. “Scarborough Fair” is indeed a re-make of the classic from SIMON & GARFUNKLE, but it’s been gently metalized. I love the guitar solo playing alongside the main melody line, and the flute at the end.

“Reborn from the Ashes” closes the EP. It has both an upbeat and commanding sound. The Death vocals were unexpected but definitely add a unique twist to the music. The instrumental section with spoken words are also a unique twist…this album is full of surprises! The spoken words push you resolve to not let the world get the best of you, and to rise and overcome. The harmonic vocals are a nice touch as well, as Ellie’s voice lifts high into the heavens. Overall, I think they are on to something here. Some Symphonic Metal bands are just a bit over the top but they keep those elements in check, just supporting the main sound rather than taking it over. They have a wonderful vocalist and a strong sense of songwriting. Any fan of the genre should find this to their liking!
