Barbe-Q-Barbies – Borrowed Time

Barbe-Q-Barbies
Borrowed Time
by "Metal Mark" Garcia at 12 July 2019, 6:44 AM

Someone, please, tell Rock bands that it’s impossible to travel back in time!

Sometimes, it’s unbearable to hear bands with old musical ways, because a great part of them insists to play and sound as in the past, even being 20-30 years before these trends ended. It’s a great loss of energy and efforts, but there are good names even on such eroded musical ways, as the Finnish quintet BARBE-Q-BARBIES show on “Borrowed Time”.

It’s a melodic and nasty form of Classic Rock/Hard Rock that could be found on the second half of the 70’s, but the girls knew that their music could sound alive taking the necessary care to transpose it to the present times. So it’s melodic, alive and done with a lot of catchy parts that will catch new fans for sure. Yes, it’s nothing new at all in terms of Metal/Rock genres, but it’s alive and full of a seductive energy. They recorded their songs as a modern band, using the right digital technologies, but with charming and simple instrumental tunes (from where comes the organic feeling of the album). This mix preserved their musical energy and enables everyone to understand how these girls are able to set the fans on fire!

Musically, they have guts, indeed. The Groove/Funk O’ Metal influences heard on “Diz-Funk-tional” (very good vocals, indeed), the tender energy shown on “Alive” (very good chorus, indeed), the accessible electric Rock ‘n’ Roll songs (both with excellent presence of bass guitar and drums) “Hangman’s Song” and “Made of Scars”, and the nasty weight of “On and On” are their best moments on the album. But all the songs are a really good experience for the ears.

These girls still have enough potential to transform into high level music. But for now, “Borrowed Time” is a very good choice to enjoy your time.
