This is what Rock music should be. Always.
BIG ENGINE are the perfect example of Rock done right. It’s catchy, got great hooks, sing a long choruses and it’s all light hearted, non-serious stuff. If you’re thinking
AC/DC or
AIRBOURNE, then you’re on the right lines except rather than Australia, this two-piece hail from Jacksonville, Florida, and as such providing us with a Southern slant to go with their upbeat Hard Rock sound.
Songs like
“Party Like A Rock Star”,
“Shake That Thing”,
“I’m Ready – Let’s Go” and the brilliant title track are proof that contemporary Rock doesn’t have to be whiny crap about a failed relationship, or some miserable personal experience that may or may not have actually happened to the songwriter. Sure if you listen to an album and like it then it’s an enjoyable experience,
BIG ENGINE provide you with a different form of enjoyment. Was I grinning like an idiot the whole way through this album? You bet I was.
That’s not to say that the band is a one trick pony, the show off their softer side to good effect on songs such as
“Sister Mary” and
“Not Your Fool”, giving you some time to catch your breath before being thrown back in to the feel good vibes that
BIG ENGINE so ably provide. I’m primarily a Metal fan, not even the most pompous collection of Power Metal can make me enjoy myself more than this.
Ok, before I continue rambling on like the excitable fool I am, let’s be serious for a mo. This is plain and simple Rock n’ Roll, it’ll get your head nodding and your foot tapping. There’s nothing flashy, except the odd guitar solo, but there doesn’t need to be, it’s just so infectious. The two guys are clearly a good natured bunch with the tongue in cheek lyrics to
“Nice Sass”, which also displays the best example of their southern roots coming to the fore. These guys aren’t taking the piss, but they are definitely having fun.
As stated in
“Burn It Down”, “we get a little crazy, and we get a little loud, everybody wants to party with the boys from the South”. I can understand why. Cracking job.
