Bison Machine – Hoarfrost

Bison Machine
by Dave “That Metal Guy” Campbell at 15 August 2015, 11:13 PM

BISON MACHINE is a Heavy Rock/Stoner/Blues Rock band based out of Michigan, United States. As far as I can tell, this is the band’s debut release, and contains six tracks. Right out of the gate, the lack of pretention is the first thing you hear. A fuzzy, easy listening riff and mid-range vocals are the décor for “Cosmic Ark.” Images of the 1970’s immediately come to mind as well. “Old Moon” is a bit longer and psychedelic sounding… like something TED NUGENT might have written back in the day. The bright guitar tones however give the track a more modern edge. “Gamekeeper’s Thumb” opens with a soft, slow bass riff, and a build up into the main sound of the song. The power button is turned up at times and when the full instrumentation is on display in “jam” mode, it’s actually quite moving, in a bluesy way. “Viking Hand” comes at you more straightforward and with haste. The main riff registers a higher frequency and there is more connectivity between verse and chorus.

“Speed of Darkness” might best typify the overall sound on the album. It has that galloping riff that swings back and forth and forward at the same time. This isn’t the kind of music that you overthink. Closing the album is the nine minute track called “Giant’s Coffin.” With a song at this length, there is plenty of time for a little exploration and build up. The opening sound reminds me of an early LED ZEPPELIN riff, with vocals distorted via phaser effects. The bass guitar does a nice job of carrying the main melody at times as well. Overall I found the description and tracks consistent with the style. While it didn’t overly excite me, there were peaks here and there that were pleasantly done, and I feel there is potential for the band to build on.
