Welp, I knew the good times wouldn’t last. After a pretty good run of about five impressive albums in a row, what makes its way to me? Some band BLACK MAGIC whose newest album, or abomination, “Wizard’s Spell” will be coming out via High Roller Records in January. I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s start with the extremely cliché and derivative name, BLACK MAGIC. Though with as many bands as they rip off their name should be BLACK MAIDEN IRON SABBATH-TALLICA. I swear, people, there is pretty much nothing original found on this thing. Even the cover looks like it was drawn by a kid at recess with crayons.
There’s a piece of MAIDEN’S “Stranger In a Strange Land”, there’s a bit of METALLICA’S “Seek and Destroy”, and the rest of it is recycled BLACK SABBATH riffs with ill-advised attempts to capture a NWOBHM rawness. The lead singer Jon even manages to do his best David Byrne from the TALKING HEADS impression at times. This will be the shortest piece I’ve ever written for METAL TEMPLE, because this thing can’t get out of my speakers fast enough. Oy.
