Black Star Riders - The Killer Instinct Award winner

Black Star Riders
The Killer Instinct
by Chelsea Jennings at 31 January 2015, 3:37 PM

BLACK STAR RIDERS was formed by our members of the former THIN LIZZIE, and were joined by former MEGADETH and ALICE COOPER drummer “Jimmy DeGrasso”. Their second release “The Killer Instinct” will be out via “Nuclear Blast” on 23 February 2015. BLACK STAR RIDERS will prove that they are still a classic rock band in their own right.

The overall vibe of the track is upbeat and positive just like the messages, mixed with old-school rock vibes that bands like THIN LIZZY sent with their material. Songs like “Killer Instinct” and “Bullet” talk about taking a shot at your dreams, and doing what you believe in. It’s a real reminder that if we never take a shot at what we want in life, we will never get it. The album brings these tracks to the listener as upbeat, positive songs that are  something of “rock anthems” that set the tone for the album.

Some of the other tracks discuss other very real topics that are part of life as well. “Soldierstown” discusses the reality of war, death, and the families it can tear apart. There are many perils involved with war, but it’s necessary to maintain our freedom to do what we love, and to stand up for what we believe in as a people. “Charlie I Gotta Go” talks about how we will all have to leave someone we love at some point. There comes a point we all have to move on with our lives, and this is the point for the person in the song. They have to go on and live their lives. It’s not easy, but all good things, like a summer romance, do come to an end. “Blindsided” begins like a ballad, but questions why we should live in the past when we can move on to the future. This song reminds us that the future is where we must look. The past cannot provide us anything anymore, we must move on to the future to find what we are after.

Overall, “The Killer Instinct” is an awesome awesome blend of modern rock anthems combined with classic rock sounds like THIN LIZZY used to make. It’s not hard to imagine this band being four of the five former members of THIN LIZZY, yet BLACK STAR RIDERS have done an awesome job of modernizing their sound to what rock and metal fans want to hear in 2015.
