Blitz - Fight to Survive

Fight to Survive
by Kevin Lewis at 10 August 2020, 8:44 PM

BLITZ is a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band from Nottingham, England formed in 2015. They are a three-piece with all members taking on parts of the vocal duties. BLITZ has been busy, releasing an EP and full-length album prior to “Fight To Survive”, their sophomore effort. Dropping August 21, 2020, “Fight To Survive” will be self-released and available through Bandcamp.

At first glance, I thought this was an album of cover tunes. Many of the titles look and sound familiar; however, these are all originals. The songs do not sound at all like the tracks you might have expected. “One In A Million” does not have a GUNS ‘N’ ROSES feel, nor does “Blood Brothers” evoke anything like IRON MAIDEN. Instead, you get a new song that displays their love of bands like G’N’R and MAIDEN. They honor without being copycats, an impressive feat for a new band.

It is also abundantly clear that this band takes some of their cues and themes from their influences. “Party Time” sounds like it could have been done by KISS or MOTLEY CRUE and “Rock Show” is the prototypical song about needing to get to a concert (aren’t we all dying for that about now??). Probably my biggest question about this band is whether they want to be the party guys or the serious rockers. They do both on this record, and I think they do the serious rockers better. As catchy as these two songs try to be, I think their best songs are the ones that make you want to headbang, not try to hook up with the hottie in the front row.

“Waiting For A Miracle” and Damage Is Done” are proof that their guitar riffs and pounding rhythm section are ready to take control of the listener and make them throw their hands in the air. For a three-piece band, they have a really big sound. They can also drop off the furious pace and move you along slowly while building the tension. You know it’s about to kick off and you cannot wait for lift-off!

BLITZ is a good band. When I say the party songs don’t hook me, that doesn’t mean they aren’t good songs, I just don’t feel they are the strongest songs on the record. Their straight forward rockers are just better. I love the perseverance theme you hear in some of their songs. These guys can, and do, write anthemic type songs that make you want to get up and get near the stage and scream along with the singer. That is a skill that not every band has. Crank this record up and have some fun!
