Blood Red Fog - On Death's Wings

Blood Red Fog
On Death's Wings
by Kostas Kiriakis at 10 June 2014, 8:12 PM

Third full length album for Finnish BLOOD RED FOG. If you know who they are and like what they did so far, just stop reading and go get that album. If not, read on.
Being true to their previous releases, BLOOD RED FOG continue down the same path of melancholic depressive mid-tempo black metal they've been traveling since their conception. If you're unaware of what I'm talking about, you could say that they sound similar to their compatriots SATURNIAN MIST and COSMIC CHURCH. Actually, members of BLOOD RED FOG had been with those two bands at some point, so it kind of explains the similarities. IF you ask me, they kind of remind me of early BURZUM and TIAMAT at times. But still it makes no difference.

5 songs running at a total of 37 minutes, “On Death's Wings” is a bleak journey into hopeless desolation. Continuously switching back and forth between slow paced minor key melodies and faster tremolo riffing passages, swoons the listener through the whole ordeal. From the melancholic opening of “Blazing Star”, up to the 10 minute opus of “Liberation”, these guys never disappoint one bit.  In addition I loved the lo-fi approach on the production, even if I'd like that damned ride to cut through the mix more. But still, it's great as it is.

If you're after fast paced annihilation forget it. BLOOD RED FOG are artists with the full meaning of the word, inviting you to a nightmarish place you should never go, but still, you'll eventually wind up going there anyway.
