Broken Hope - Omen Of Disease

Broken Hope
Omen Of Disease
by Yassine "SpiritCrusher" Mankai at 08 November 2013, 2:14 AM

Old Brutal Death Metal band BROKEN HOPE has reformed this year after 14 years of suspension of activity with new members as Damian Leski (vocals), Mike Micezek (drums) and Chuck Wepfer (guitar). BROKEN HOPE released five albums between 1991 and 1999, which allowed the band to build a good status among fans of the Death Metal scene of the 90s.

The year 2013 marks the release of the sixth full length album entitled "Omen Of Disease", but this time under the famous label Century Media for international distribution of the album. For those who are familiar with BROKEN HOPE, the band is considered a cult act, but the question that arises, is this "Omen Disease" will help to keep this status?

The album starts with an intro before giving the way to "Womb of Horrors", which places the listener directly in the heart of the matter. A conventional brutality and unoriginal that announces itself. I continue with the next tracks and I find a big difficulty memorizing a riff or a passage. The different kinds of blast beats and fast tempos were the dominant elements in most tracks. "The Docking Dead" surprised me with a great solo at the end, which has given me the desire to continue the listening session.

I must say that the influences of CANNIBAL CORPSE are present here, with how to conceive this Brutal Death Metal qualified as a Grind core Metal for a large part of the pieces. Damien Leski’s voice is the one on this album; it is actually super guttural and aggressive to a point where you cannot understand anything. This is perhaps the distinctive point of BROKEN HOPE knowing that this kind of voice was used before with the former lead singer Joe Ptacek (R.I.P.). The rest of the album is marked with a lack of dynamism and a poor creativity with songs that rarely exceed 3 minutes for a total of 37 minutes without counting the bonus.

BROKEN HOPE is a band that masters the subject of Brutal Death Metal in total, but you can find hundreds of bands doing the same thing. I did not really feel the personality of the band apart some solo passages or ultra-technical riffs. This is an album that only marks the return of the group, without really giving way to an exception in Death Metal material.
