As they proudly sport fake tans, clothing that emphasises their bust and all other things that are automatically deemed feminine
BUTCHER BABIES front ladies
Heidi Shepherd and
Carla Harvey are living proof that you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover. These two ladies can scream, growl and sing flawlessly like it’s going out of fashion. Their latest release
“Take It Like A Man” shows a small development in their already promising sound can make a grand impact.
Despite their critics claiming that they are using their sexuality to make it big in the metal, a common misconception with women in metal today, I have admired
BUTCHER BABIES since first listening to their album
“Goliath” last year. I particularly love their no-nonsense, uncaring attitude when they perform their angry, bold material with dominance and power.
Onto the album; it starts of excruciatingly well with their catchy single
“Monsters Ball”, the opening lines “ladies and gentlemen step right up” in the perfect presenter style hooks you almost instantly, you are then hit with their aggressive screaming along to brilliant melodies on the instrumentation.
From that point they are well under way with their angry sounding tracks that make you want to break out into a neck braking head bang wherever you happen to be; this is demonstrated well in the songs
“The Cleansing”,
“Gravemaker” and
“Blood Soaked Hero”. The biggest suprise on this album for me was the song
“Thrown Away”, it’s the first song I have heard by these ballsy ladies in clean vocals and I have got to say they executed this perfectly.
My personal favourite track on the album is “Never Go Back”; the bounciness, aggression and the kickass them all add together to make my personal perfect Metal song. I can imagine it would be great to experience this song live.
Ever since stumbling across their material a year ago I have only been awaiting new material and it was certainly worth it. Those of you who are fans of
IN THIS MOMENT and
THE AGONIST this is certainly a new treat for you.
