CARCHARODON… a band whose description states they are “Drunk and mean as a rattlesnake, kickin' like a mule!” Well, if they were drunk at the time of the recording, and at the time they listened to the final mix of the album and agreed that it sounded good enough to release, then that would explain the album. The production is terrible, the music is less than impressive, and the vocal work is shoddy at best. They also describe themselves as Macho Metal. Really?
MANOWAR is “Macho Metal”. These guys are a college recording project gone horribly wrong.
I rarely give negative reviews, and I never dog a band that plays a particular style of music I don’t like. There is, however, a certain level of professionalism that all bands should be held to if they expect people to spend hard earned money on their music. After listening to the album twice, there is very little I can say positive about the album, which sucks. Track after track is a muddled mix of sludge and Stoner Metal that drips with “fuck it, it’s Metal” mentality.
Pixo’s vocals have moments of power and brutal goodness, such as
“Stoneface Legacy”, but then they get sloppy and almost cartoonish, as though the songs are some kind of a joke. The background vocals need to just go away, very far away.
Zack’s drum work sounds weak and high schoolish, and offer no support to any of the songs. Lyrically the songs are simple, immature, and just silly. It’s like they were trying to channel their inner hair band while stoned out their minds after a 24 hour Beavis and Butthead marathon. These are all fun things to do, but not at once, and not while writing album lyrics. The guitar work has its moments of badass riffage like on
“Chupacobra”, and
“Stoneface Legacy”, but really that’s about it. And bass? What bass? Bass work was non-existent. For a rating, I’d say 4 out 10. Officially my lowest rating for any album. Remember, friends don’t let friends play bad music. This is why. Until next time, stay well, and live free!
