Carl Dixon - One (Reissue)

Carl Dixon
One (Reissue)
by Marco Anglieri at 04 November 2019, 11:25 PM

“One” is the reissue of the debut album of CARL DIXON (originally released in 1993), Ontario born frontman of the critically acclaimed hard rock band Coney Hatch, as well as APRIL WIND and THE GUESS WHO“One” features the 15 original songs present in the original version, plus two bonus tracks plus (including the acoustic version of “Love is waiting”).

There is not so much to say about this album, being it an old release, which nowadays sounds outdated. “One” was a really good release back in the day, but, honestly, I do not see the need of re-releasing it 26 years later, also after another re-release back in 2017. “One” nevertheless, is (or better, was) a great album, but nothing seminal, although if you have missed, you should definitely give it a try. Being an old release, despite the new mastering, the songs sound of deja-vu, and you can recall many influences.

My favorite tracks are the “Against the night”, a mix between an uptempo ballad and a slow rock song, “Taste of love” which is wise mix between AEROSMITH and DEF LEPPARD sound and “Love is waiting” both in the normal and in the acoustic version (I personally prefer the normal version, with a more full sound and more intense). Also the other bonus track “Don’t turn out the light” is a good episode, which winks to the pop music from the nineties.

As for all the re-releases, I wonder whether they make sense or not. Sometimes is nice to hear to old songs that buy back some charm thanks to the new technology, but most of the time it is not worth to spend money if have or know the original. In this case I would pass over, but clearly stating that “One” was, back in the day, a good album and that CARL DIXON is a good singer and a good songwriter.
