Century - Melancholia (CD)

Century
Melancholia
by Stathis Giannakopoulos at 15 February 2001, 8:21 PM

Before I start, I have to mention that a release like Melancholia doesn't belong here, in this magazine. I'm not against other musical genres of course but on the other hand I have to warn you that Century has almost nothing to do with Heavy Metal.
These guys play a mixture of Rock/wave/Gothic and 80's pop!(?). Keyboards and Samples combined with soft guitars and very good deep vocals. The only thing Century have in common with Heavy Metal is that Markus Jullich used to play Metal with Crematory. OK, there are a few Metal riffs here and there. Someone can define Melancholia as Gothic Metal but I can't say that I can accept this definition. Maybe you can, I don't know. They have some very good dark melodies and some great keyboard parts. I really like some of the songs I can't deny that. They manage to incorporate 80's Pop feeling into Rock and Gothic and that is what I find interesting. I don't hate Pop music when it's good. Sorry but I can't say more. It's not a genre that I know…
The only thing that I know is that if you are into Heavy Metal and you need to hear something softer, you should try Century. If you happen to be a Gothic/wave freak maybe you'll love them. They'll visit my CD-player again, I'm sure, but since the zine is called METAL Temple and not Gothic/Pop or something like that, I can't give a high rate. This album might be a very good friend for the lonely hearts. Maybe on a Gothic zine someone could rate it with 4 and above… But here…
