Clive Nolan & Oliver Wakeman - The Hound Of The Baskervilles (CD)

Clive Nolan & Oliver Wakeman
The Hound Of The Baskervilles
by Aris Stremmenos at 12 April 2002, 11:53 PM

What first caught my attention was Clive Nolan's name, whom I've seen in many projects and bands, such as Ayreon and Lana Lane. Then the theme of the album also seemed intriguing, because not so many books become the concept of an album. Then I also noticed Bob Catley's and Arjen Lucassen's named on the cover of the album, and I made my decision, to give the album a try!
I'd put this album, roughly, under the category of progressive rock, with many symphonic elements. Both Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman are keyboard players, and it comes natural for the album to be mainly based on keyboards, than guitars. Melodies rather than riffs are the center of the music here, surrounded and completed by first-class vocals, especially by Bob Catley, with each singer having a single role. Also playing the part of Dr. Watson, and narrating the album is the quite-known actor Robert Powel (Jesus Of Nazareth).
As for the concept and the lyrics, I have to admit that I haven't read the book yet, and it's been ages since I last saw the movie, so I can't judge them, if they have been accurate enough!
The whole thing, in general reminds a lot of Ayreon, although it's not as futuristic as Ayreon are, and it also has it's own identity. A very good prog-rock album, without fanfares and unnecessary elements and with a great performance by Bob Catley, makes it a good choice.
