Cocaine Culture - A New Shade of Black

Cocaine Culture
A New Shade Of Black
by Tom Hanno at 08 February 2022, 12:32 PM

The COCAINE CULTURE  album isn't something that I would normally listen to. While there are some decent guitar riffs going on, the vocals are just too much Black Metal for me. I don't like 99% of most Black Metal, and Cody uses that raw vocal approach  too much for me to really enjoy their music. However, his more Death Metal vocals are pretty cool, and I wish he'd have used them a bit more often.

The music on "A New Shade of Black" can be really cool at times, yet feels lacking at others. Now don't get me wrong, they're good at what they do, but I just don't get the whole Blackgaze thing, nor the Black Metal thing, but I'm sure that fans of those genres will really dig what COCAINE CULTURE is laying down.

There are a couple of songs that I enjoyed, one being "Am I Alone". While the vocals in the beginning are pretty much the standard Black Metal sound, there are some spots afterwards that sound cool, and the music is more in line with the kind of underground stuff that I can connect with.

The other song that I thought was decent is called "A New Shade of Black". Musically this one is much more my thing, the haunting riffs and tones are very cool, and Cody also utilizes more of a Death Metal vocal approach, making this a song that I really enjoyed hearing.

If you asked me what my biggest gripe would be, I would tell you that it's the fact that it took me repeated listens to find things that  are positive elements. I tend to lose interest in albums that take that much to get into, even in genres that I am a fan of, but I did notice that I found more things to my liking as I persevered. I do think that fans of this style will like the band, so don't rely on this review to make up your mind on COCAINE CULTURE. I hope that you'll get out there and check them out for yourselves, in order to make your own, informed decisions. Enjoy!!!
