Collected – Say When

Say When
by Metal Wim at 17 May 2022, 8:50 PM

I was quite amazed I got sent this by our main editor to review. This is not something I would listen to of my own accord. What are we talking about, you might ask? Here we go: Nu Metal was a very big thing when it was first released to the big public in the nineties. Many a band made a splash and got into the big league. And even though they call themselves Modern Metallers, there is no escaping the fact that the UK band COLLECTED fall into that very category. Their brand of clean vocals, grunts and shouts, which are combined with lowly tuned guitars already bring you into that direction. But it’s the combination of almost JOURNEY like subtleness with the really heavy guitars and sometimes brutal rhythms that seal the deal.

Is that a bad thing? Not bad at all, if the music is any good. And I have to admit that after having listened to “Say When” for a number of times I can only conclude that this is a rather pleasant surprise, and to your mind at rest, “Say When” is better than I expected. No, this won’t set the musical world on fire, but it also doesn’t hurt to have to listen to this EP, as “Say When” offers you a good insight as to what COLLECTED is capable of. Especially as this is their very first release, they should have enough scope to improve with time and age. I just hope they have the audacity to ignore all the well-meant comments and advice they undoubtedly going to get and just do what they feel like. That way they will be able to proceed in the most natural way.  Oh, I realise I just gave them some advice. Guys, please feel free to ignore me. What do I know?

But joking aside, I really do feel that if COLLECTED stays true to themselves, they might go on to become better and stronger with age, as the foundations are very solid, the musical ability of the band is far above par and the vocals somehow always sound exactly as they should. While I am listening to the EP I have to admit that “Faceless Man” reminds me a little of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Well, let’s be honest, there are a lot worse comparisons to be made. But this is COLLECTED, and they are their own band. Let’s see if they can stay that way.
