COMA HOLE is a Stoner/Doom Metal duo from Westerly, Rhode Island. “Coma Hole” is the group’s first EP, released independently on April 22, 2022.
For a band that only consists of bass and drums, these guys know how to fill out their sound. The bass sounds thick, crunchy, and full, bringing the melodic flavor of Geezer Butler (because, it goes without saying that the BLACK SABBATH worship is strong with this band) with the gritty, balls-out attitude of LemmyEryka Fir’s singing is soulful and beautiful, blending bluesy gravitas with Classic Rock character effortlessly. And, last but not least, Steve Anderson’s drumming is powerful, brilliantly making use of space and showing that you don’t have to be all about speed to be extremely heavy.
The opening track, “The Familiar,” is a lengthy jam that feels like it could’ve belonged on WOLFMOTHER’s debut album. Starting off slow, the track builds and builds in tempo and suspense until you’re head banging so hard you feel like you’re going to snap your neck.
Following that is “Old Climb,” the first single from this EP and the shortest track on it. A fun, rocking number that grooves, bobs and weaves, this song will surely get you dancing with its driving beat, beautiful harmonies from Fir, and momentary blast beats. Additionally, the brief organ passages and the bass harmonies over the main riffs are excellent touches.
The third song on this EP is “Wind and Bone,” the second single from the release. Definitely one of the melancholier tracks on this album, Fir’s singing prowess is demonstrated with full force here, building haunting harmonies and reaching unbelievable melodic heights.
Finally, the EP closes with “Sinking,” another long-winded but not bloated jam with a definite air of foreboding. With its trippy middle section, spaced out riffs and punky outro, this track, more than any of the other ones on this EP, will take you on a journey.
Overall, this is a very strong collection of songs. COMA HOLE know how to create bona fide Rock anthems and get the lead out with the best of them. A band consisting of just bass and drums has never sounded this big.
