Communion - The Communion (Reissue) Award winner

The Communion (Reissue)
by Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia at 02 March 2018, 10:08 AM

The Chilean Thrash/Black Metal cult is back for one more blow into your ears! Yes, COMMUNION is back, with another album, called “The Communion”. Now, they are a trio, but reinforcing what was told about them: these three maniacs really play with a very good old school insight, influenced by SODOM, VENOM and others, but they find a way to sound aggressive and nasty in this old genre, but with personality. They don’t have a refined musical technique, because they don’t need it. Their technique is enough to make their musical work into something very, very good to our ears.

Differently from their previous work (their album “At the Announcement”), this time they had a better sound quality. It’s still harsh and raw, but it’s dry, in a way that our understanding of what they are playing is better. The instrumental tunes are good, the vocal tunes are better, so everything get better. As the band became a trio, we can see that evolution took its toll, because their music shows improvements. The musical arrangements were lapidated in a way that their songs are showing very good harmonic structures, but without let their instrumental technique becomes complex. No, their music still sounds nasty and aggressive, but with some refinements from experience (especially on the tempos, where a good amount of diversity can be heard).

“The Communion” is a very good album, indeed, having as its best moments the heavy and abrasive weight shown on the guitars of “Glorify the Dark”, the aggressive Old School heavy rhythm of “Embrace Cruelty’s Flame”, the bitterness of guitars on “Witching Thrust”, the charming harmonies of “Fire Worship” (a very good work of bass guitar and drums can be heard), and the throat attack of fury that the vocals unleash on the excellent “Funeral of Mercy”. They still have musical potential to use, but with “The Communion”, the trio gave a step forward. Listen to it and feel your ears bleed!
