Concilivm – A Monument in Darkness

A Monument in Darkness
by Savely Nevzorov at 02 May 2022, 2:44 PM

Chilean anonymous two-piece death metal act CONCILIVM returns with their fresh LP “A Monument In Darkness” released via Iron Bonehead Productions. This album is the band's first debut LP released four years after their EP "The Veiled Enigma". The musical prowess demonstrated on the debut release sparkled with new colors showcased in the skillful combination of elements from various branches of death metal. Such eclecticism, however, looks extremely appropriate. Focusing on familiar genre elements, CONCILIVM seems to lean on everything at once without suffering from an identity crisis.

Let's dot all the i's right away: “A Monument in Darkness” is a death metal record with all the ensuing consequences. Groove motives? - Check! Machine gun blast beats? Check! Crispy and chaotic solos?  Check! Hoarse womb vocals?  On the spot! But the devil is in the details which "A Monument in Darkness" is filled with. There are intricate moments when Consilivm manages to blend their sound with occasional slam swings like in the track “The Veil Descents”, or intriguing black metal passages as in case “Moonlight Nigredo”. The familiarity created by utilization of the genre’s most noticeable clichés seems to create a very false sense of comfort, as CONCILIVM strikes its hardest when you think that you already know what’s coming. The band is by no means reinvents the genre or somehow incredibly experiments with its essence but such small cross-genre tricks are significantly enriching the listening experience.

A certain eclecticism is present not only in composing, but also in mixing and mastering. I have to say, I really like it when death metal bands choose a slightly washed-out smeared sound. At times such sound choice could lead to loss in readability but CONCILIVM manages to avoid any skews and find the very balance between the clearness of individual elements and the consonance of their totality. Deep, resonant grooves sound just as good as chaotic resonant blast beats with each element gaining its own zest thanks to its specific sound design.

“A Monument In Darkness” is a great debut for CONCILIVM as they manage to intrigue with their special approach towards familiar elements. Sometimes, it seems, the band is still a little shy to go a little further than playing around familiar themes in a new way but a start has been made. These Chileans already sound more interesting than many of their colleagues for which we should pay them a nod of respect and look forward to new releases with sincere interest.
