Continuum – Designed Obsolescence Award winner

Designed Obsolescence
by Brian "Metal" Morton at 10 March 2019, 4:32 PM

Formed in 2009, CONTINUUM based out of Santa Cruz, California, have released their second full length album since 2015. Their latest album, “Designed Obsolescence”, is a Technical Death Metal masterpiece. From the incredible guitar work by Chase Fraser and Ivan Munguia to the bass playing by Nick Willbrand, drumming by Ron Casey and vocals from Riley Mcshane, this album is awe inspiring. The first song “Theorem” is a truly remarkable song and lays the foundation of the album. I was banging my head almost instantly and I listened to this one quite a few times. It’s beautiful but nasty as fuck at the same time.

The second song “Release from Flesh and Blood” makes me think of a freight train that has lost it’s breaks and is going full speed. The guitar solo comes out of nowhere and is an amazing addition to the song. This band kinda reminds me of NECROPHAGIST a bit which makes me unbelievably happy. “A History Denied” kicks in at full force and it is most assuredly a face shredder. So far this album is one of the best things I have heard so far this year. “Designed Obsolescence” is one of those songs that make your heart start palpitating and make your pupils dilate. The sheer brutality and intricacies of this song are unapologetic and it is one of my favorites so far.

“All Manner of Decay” what can I say about this song besides GOD DAMN! This song is unrelenting and absolutely the epitome of insanely well written Tech Death. It’s one that will make you want to demolish everything around you with a smile on your face. “Autonomic” is like having a manic mood where you can decide if you want to go full blown crazy or not. I really enjoyed this bipolar roller coaster of a song. “Into the Void” is like when you’ve had one too many shots of espresso in your coffee and didn’t realize until it was too late. This song makes me either want to go out and pick a fight with a thousand people or get in a high speed chase with the police. Basically what I’m saying is the energy is immense and doesn’t let up for a second.

“Remnants of Ascension” starts off a bit darker than it’s predecessors, but quickly gets back into the beautiful chaos that this album has been all about. The only sad part is that it was only a little over two minutes long. “Repeating Actions” is the epic finale I would expect this amazing album to have. For me personally CONTINUUM has taken the spot in my metal heart that was once occupied by NECROPHAGIST and they have even improved upon Tech Death in my eyes. So congratulations guys, you now have a fan for life. Keep up the great work and I hope to see you on tour one day!
