Conviction – Conviction

Conviction
Conviction

CONVICTION is a doom metal band from Normandy, France, having been established in 2013 as a solo project for vocalist Olivier Verron with the release of demo “Promo 2013” in that same year along with self-titled EP “Conviction” in 2014, but with the addition of drummer Rachid “Teepee” Trabelsi in 2017 came the band’s first single “Outworn” and with bassist Vincent Buisson and guitarist Frédéric Patte-Brasseur joining the fold in 2018 to complete the lineup the band were ready to take on the world with their debut full length studio release their self-titled album “Conviction” was released via Argonauta Records in 2021.

This album is packed with eight sludgy doom metal tracks created by true doom metal fans for true doom metal fans with sounds resembling SAINT VITUS, PENTAGRAM, COUNT RAVEN and even early CATHEDRAL with the powerful vocals of Olivier Verron as he and Frédéric Patte-Brasseur hit listeners with slow & sludgy guitar riffs while Rachid “Teepee” Trabelsi comes in with those heavy hitting drums and the band’s sound is only made heavier by the bass playing of Vincent Buisson.

Four of the eight tracks on this album were in fact released almost seven years prior to the rest of the album as part of an EP with the same name, the unreleased tracks on the album were the opening track “Prologue Affliction” and the two final tracks “Castles Made Of Shame” and “My Sanctuary” the fifth track “Outworn” wasn’t on that EP either but had been released as a single in 2017.

The albums opening track “Prologue Affliction” is as it says a prologue to the album, it’s a very short track, not even a minute long unlike the rest of the tracks that are up at five and a half to six minutes at the shortest and almost eleven and a half minutes at the longest, this track is a calm sounding instrumental track that is so short that if a listener blinks they may miss it but is a nice way to open the album definitely.

The albums penultimate track “Castles Made Of Shame” starts of as a very powerful ballad style track with powerful vocals and a mild but well written complimentary instrumentation to back it up how ever it does build up to a breakdown of heavy guitars and hard hitting drums with equally powerful if not more powerful vocals then before over the top of them which works really well.

The albums final track “My Sanctuary” is the albums longest track by far at over eleven minutes in length but is definitely a track fitting of closing an album as it is a powerhouse of a track and worthy of being a grand finale for such an album as this one with loud and heavy guitars, hard hitting drums and strong vocals this track really is one of epic proportions and definitely one doom metal fans will enjoy.

Having listened to the album in its entirety, this is definitely one for anyone who long sludgy doom metal tracks and this is definitely one a band that doom metal fans should keep their eyes out for in the future without a doubt.
