Crystallion - Hatin (CD)

by Dimitris Kontogeorgakos at 26 May 2008, 11:35 AM

The title of this album was inspired by the Battle Of Hattin that took place in the year of 1187. In this battle the Crusaders faced the biggest defeat in their history that evnetually gave Jerusalem over to the Islamic forces. As you have probably guessed CRYSTALLION have created a concept album that is wrapped around this battle with an obvious Power Metal direction.
CRYSTALLION is a German band that was formed in 2003 by Stefan Gimpel and Martin Herzinger who share the same interests on the Mythology around the Knights of the Templar. Their debut album A Dark Enchanted Crystal Night hit the stores in 2006 and received some very good reviews by the Metal media. Actually, this success gave the band the chance to team up with Dockyard 1 records and after almost 2 years release the second album that is the object of this review.
The story behind the album marks the band's musical territory that resides in the Power Metal scene. Their influences come from bands like the prime Rhapsody Of Fire with minimum orchestral parts and of course the classics HELLOWEEN and STRATOVARIUS. The song structure is based on Epic and catchy melodies with the trademark keyboard vs guitars duel.   Thomas Strubler has a powerful and mainly high pitched voice that are ideal for this music genre without being something that you haven't heard. Actually, this is description applies to the album itself; catchy melodies, up-lifting tempos and an Epic atmosphere to go with. The German are very aware of their musical direction and do an excellent job! The 11 minutes of Preach With An Iron Tongue is the album's highlight with tempo changes, nice guitar hooks, IRON MAIDEN galloping rhythms that would be an excellent soundtrack for Epic battles. The crystal clear sound production takes the album to a higher level my balancing power and melody while maintaining the heroic atmosphere.
Overall, this album sounds exactly as the cover artwork implies without any surprises that for many is a good thing. If this style of music is your cup of tea and kind of missed this type of releases then add one point to my rating and go buy Hatin. You can get an taste from this release through the band's MySpace page.
