Curse Upon A Prayer - Rotten Tongues Award winner

Curse Upon A Prayer
Rotten Tongues
by Lotty Whittingham at 01 July 2015, 1:09 PM

With a band name and song titles reminding us of darkness and despair, it doesn’t take a Metal elitist to figure out what sort of genre Finland based CURSE UPON A PRAYER showcase. They call their genre Apocalyptic Black Metal that one can only assume that it’s much more powerful and destructive. Also to add to this beautifully, mysterious dark presence their lineup is left unidentified and anonymous.

CURSE UPON A PRAYER are an Apocalyptic Black Metal quartet hailing from Finland; as stated before in previous write-ups Finland is best known for producing some of the best Metal bands known worldwide. They gave us AMORPHIS, SONATA ARCTICA, CHILDREN OF BODOM….the list goes on. After listening to their second release “Rotten Tongues” it’s undeniably possible that CURSE UPON A PRAYER could enter this ever growing list.

The album commences with the famous false sense of security that either works or doesn’t. This time it works so well that you find yourself believing you are safe; you are then ambushed by the aggressive high piercing vocals that Black Metal is best known for. The opening tracks “The Distant Chaos”, “Death Sentence” and “Third Day Of Creation” immerse the listener immediately into the darkness and brutality immediately.

Though the duration of this album you experience darkness, mystery and uncertainty; the key elements in any Black Metal record, the moment you think you are safe you are hit again with the raw, aggressiveness and high piercing screams. Imagine walking through a dark, frightening forest where you don’t know where you are going. There are moments where you think you are protected; nothing can protect for the darkness yet beauty of this interesting genre. This is exactly the affect the album gives the listener so they are doing it right.

So overall a truly mysterious masterpiece; this release will blow any listener into the furthest distance possible due to its sheer vividness.
