Cystectomy - Deprive to Hollowness

Deprive to Hollowness
by Ricardo Casagrande at 11 January 2022, 9:09 AM

Formed in 2020, CYSTECTOMY is a trio of professional musicians from Hong Kong, Ecuador, and Spain. Their first full length release Deprive to Hollowness arrived in November 2021 on Comatose Records and is looking to spin some heads a complete 360 degrees with this ultra Brutal Death metal. Vocalist Randy Leung’s intense deep growl and guitar works of Oscar Ortega (the two of which have had some very busy years in other bands like FACELIFT DEFORMATION, SCATOLOGY SECRETION, and REPTILIUM, just to name a few) are a match made in demonically overtaken heaven. Adding in the relentless insanity of drums by Juan Flores, makes this release for any brutal heavy metalhead, hard to ignore.

The album starts out right where you expect it, by breaking down your senses of perception with “Incorporeal Ontologies”. In this song, and for much of the album, you are treated to Juan’s earth shaking and furious double bass and well placed fills. At times there are small drum parts that actually seem a little off beat, only to be tied back into the fray and at such a rapid pace is quite jaw dropping. The horrors of losing all memories of yourself comes to center stage in the track “Past Life Amnesia”, which features Oscar’s guitar at an unnerving progression of brutality, alongside the savage growl of Randy, has made this track a personal favorite of mine.

With most of the tracks, it is hard to understand that this chaos is just the working of three, and not the making of an alien orchestra hell bent on the destruction of mankind. Tracks like “Psychic Boundary” and “Grim Season Circulation” are very well formed and structured for a beautiful devastation. The album ends with “Witness Of The Cataclysm” and this song starts out like a pillow case of bricks connecting to your skull, then seems to create a slow creeping haunting feeling as it nears its end and slowly fades out. Even as this is happening, you are left with the aftershocks of this extremely brutal death metal offering.

It is hard to think that CYSTECTOMY will not receive attention with what they managed to put together in this album. It doesn’t seem to be lacking in anything that an extreme metal fan would be expecting and exceeds in every area. The production of the tracks and album in general is very well done as you can distinguish the notes within the hectic chaos and the songwriting is expertly structured. Though I find I can only take small bursts of extreme metal at a time, I will be returning to this album again for sure.
