Dakrya
Crime Scene
by Dimitris Karametos at 27 November 2010, 3:11 PM

I love bands that challenge music through their creativity, that actually remain true to the concept of artist and challenge art itself and the staleness that exists in it, of course being something new something “progressive” has its dangers and its dark and unnamed examples, DAKRYA manage to escape with elegance the double edged knife of creativity, a disturbingly good almost criminal creativity that created “Crime Scene”.

Although this is the first time I listen to one of their albums, I must say that “Crime Scene” is an amazing work, a small theatrical metal play close to the farce concepts of commedia dell’arte, although before hearing “Crime Scene” I was somewhat amused by the booklet of the CD, after hearing it though I ate my own words of unsavory remarks and dwelling deeper in this insane and paradoxical creation, I can only say that it takes guts and ability to create something like “Crime Scene”, especially from a Greek band. For those that look for something similar in a band one could look up DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA but since they also have released just two albums one should stick to DAKRYA.

With non standard sounds, instruments that usually are not part of a Metal band and similar insane song structures, “Crime Scene” is a dark theatrical play. Political lyrics covered around the insanity of a clown that behind the makeup exists a dark and sad reality, songs are well crafted, I for a moment was afraid that all this theatrical act is weak and not well crafted butDAKRYA understand close to perfect the concept of theatre and music thus managing to create an atmosphere that makes you feel part of a play, the characters in the songs juxtapose each other and create the intensity of the scene, the songs change slowly in pace as the play progresses becoming more and more powerful and intense, a good choice is also the two different vocal ranges of Christina and Thomais and the different roles each has in the songs, there is not a moment of loss since every song is unique, very similarly different from the other yet part of the overall concept, the listener is not allowed to get bored as every new song holds a small surprise that sets him back on track.

An amazing and unique work, “Crime Scene” was created by seven very dedicated musicians that understand that art is a form of revolution and did not fear to challenge it, in a scene filled with oversaturated genres DAKRYA come to propose something different, gutsier and manage to come out as winners.
