The Brutal Death Metal sound and aesthetic is fairly straightforward, and doesn't really change from one band or album to the next. Luckily, the formula that most bands follow is great. DAWOHL are a band that encapsulate the Brutal Death Metal sound quite well, and their first EP, "Potestas.Ratio.Iustitia.", is a great way to start their recording career as a band.

The opening track, "Canticum Belli", is essentially an orchestrated string and percussion piece that is incredibly epic and is a great way to start this EP. The second track on here, "Decimare", is a short, explosive song, which is driven by powerful drumming, and thick, gnarly sounding riffs. "Deus Ex Machina", the best track on this EP, is very fast and technical, and has a slight air of NILE about it, at least to my ears. The crowning piece of this whole song is the imaginative guitar solo that comes close to the end of the song. The penultimate song on this album, "Damnatio Memoriae", begins with a hard, marching opener which bursts into a genuinely great track, built around some fantastic guitar and bass work. The song, which closes this EP, "Verba Imperiosa", is very good, and the opening guitar line is absolutely hair raising. The production on this EP is, much like many other acts within the genre, really polished, although not to the point where it feels clinical, and this EP has really benefited from the production quality, which has allowed some of the better aspects of the music, such as the bass sections, to come into the direct focus of the listener in a way that it wouldn't have had the production been more basic and low fi.

Considering that this is the bands first recorded work, this is a very good EP. It takes most bands a few releases before they begin to flesh out their sound, but these guys have come into the Brutal Death Metal world fully formed, and ready to conquer the world. Hopefully their next release will be as good as this one.
