In general, the USA Black Metal is extremely different of other schools of the world. There, the Old School Thrash Metal and Old School Death Metal influences are easier to be felt on the bands’ musical works. It’s something that is into the USA Black Metal DNA, and can be felt on every band of those lands. But on the work of
DEATH SHROUD, things are a bit different, as can be heard on
“Death, Slavery and the Pursuit ov Sadness”, their second album.
The band uses a traditional form into Black Metal, with an evident and abrasive aggressiveness filling the songs of the album. But some technical touches (as can be heard on
“Pervasive Emptiness”) show that the personal influences of the musicians are wider than one can think. Even some Blackened Death Metal melodies (in the vein of
DISSECTION) can be heard on their work sometimes. But the band has a personal insight, so be prepared to be taken by assault.
Sterthanas (the band’s vocalist, guitarist and drummer) is the one who did the recording, mixing and mastering at October Studios. All to create a massive and nasty sonority similar to that one used by the Second Wave of Black Metal acts, but always in a way that anyone can understand.
This album is really a surprise in many ways, and to hear songs as
“Death, Slavery and the Pursuit ov Sadness” (excellent and catchy morbid guitar parts, deeply influenced by German Thrash Metal acts as
SODOM),
“Pervasive Emptiness” (some blackened melodies arises in some moments on the guitars),
“Dreams that Haunt the Mind” (there are very good contrasts, and what solid rhythms are created by bass guitar and drums),
“I Walk Among You” (that are the right ones for discovering what is offered by the band) is a very good experience.
If you’re a fan of Old School Black Metal, dive into
“Death, Slavery and the Pursuit ov Sadness”, and check out what
DEATH SHROUD is about.
