Deathsquad Demongods – Your New Favorite Fuckin' Band

Deathsquad Demongods
Your New Favorite Fuckin' Band
by Lior "Steinmetal" Stein at 19 January 2012, 12:22 PM

Right when I saw the provocative nature of the band’s photographic personality, I knew that I would be probably messing with a form very much similar to ALICE COOPER’s nightmarish infestations. The American barefaced DEATHSQUAD DEMONGODS maybe one day inherit the prominence and grandeur of Cooper when he will decide to call it quits but who really knows? I don’t see Cooper going anywhere and I know that for now he is not expected to do so. Nonetheless, they weren’t that far from convincing me that they aim to be the next Hard Rockin’ bizarre thing in the nowadays modern scene.

DEATHSQUAD DEMONGODS’s music made me bang my head with its simplistic and catchy elements that created several of cool easy to get to and straightforwardly arranged tracks. As in every notable Hard Rock sensation, the lead guitar fretwork made its impact. However, I wouldn't say that I was that overjoyed by Nobuaki Hayashi’s wah-wah induced solos, other than the wild one on “All Of The Demons Pledge Allegiance To Me”, but those were satisfying. What can I say? I am not that of a Wah-Wah fan. The rhythm section of ChrisMancini, bass, Jerry Geronimo, drums was pretty basic in outline and seemed natural for the genre as most of the tracks were in the same mid tempo.

Moreover, these guys, and their leader Stevie Peavey, didn’t mean to be that serious as they joked around a bit with some weird lyrical lines and amusing vocal layouts that resembled Punk’s flat line pattern, but it was only in the name of humour right? Sure it was. If you take care to listen to the entire release, you would see that Peavey, both vocals and rhythm guitars, had more to offer in the mic post. I liked his work on the album’s hits like on the western Rockin’ oriented tune of “Apocalypse Joe”, which had an amazing chorus of a joint back up gang like vocals and Peavey’s rough voice, and the motivational group groove of the addictive “All Of The Demons Pledge Allegiance To Me” that seemed like the assembling cry of further underworld followers for a bad ass massive army.

On the other hand, I thought that “Deathsquad Demongods” and the tribute track for JUDAS PRIEST, “Judas Priest”, which mentioned the names of some of the band’s greatest hits of the early 80s, weren’t that impressive and rather boring very similar to the one that MEGADETH did with "Victory" that portrayed their older songs. The latter was heavier and closer to pure traditional Metal offensive, yet it could have been way improved. DEATHSQUAD DEMONGODS are a very nice band and I think that this debut effort is rather good as a starting point. These guys share great energies with a high motivation to create havoc and provocations in Hard Rock / Rock N’ Roll as presented in the 80s.
