Decapitated - Anticult Award winner

by Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia at 14 July 2017, 11:22 AM

Evolution is the main driving force in the world of n music. It’s simple: if a band can’t evolve, it will fall in two cases: you must establish your musical work on a level that will be recognized and become great (case of bands like MOTORHEAD, AC/DC and IRON MAIDEN), or you can evolve and become grow a lot, to reach a different public (although you can lose some fans of the past due the changes). But as well to evolve is to keep your musical identity, and only in rare cases does the public accept the new personality (THERION should fit perfectly in this definition, for the changed from a Death Metal outfit to a Symphonic Metal one). But this trial is for the strong ones, but bands like the Polish quartet DECAPITATED seems to have no fear, and they dare to evolve, as “Anticult”, their new album, is here to prove.

From the earlier Technical Death Metal outfit from the past to this new one, with a more defined set of tunes, a modern sound crush, technical and filled with Groove parts, they did a great job. Of course there are fans turning their faces to them, but they are doing things in a way that will conquer more fans. Personally, I think that they keep the same personality from the past pulsing behind this wall of killing hooking guitar riffs, harsh and modern snarled tunes on vocals, and a solid and great work from bass guitar and drums. Yes, it’s excellent, brutal, but with a defined and clear sound. On their seventh album, the quartet had a brutal and clean sound production. Yes, the crushing impact of the songs is amazing, but the modern insight of the album, a dry sound was demanded. And they did in such way, with very good tunes in all instruments and an impacting sound that is violent, but done with care. And loud and clear in a way that will disturb you neighbors, but fits in what they are musically doing.

Massive, heavy as Hell and modern, “Anticult” gathers elements from modern Metal genres. And if it is not as aggressively raw as in the past, it is furious and destructive. Songs as the technical and brutal “Impulse” (that shows very good technical work from bass guitar and drums into a chaotic and bitter maelstrom of tempo changes and hooking musical arrangements), the oppressive impact of the guitar riff on “Kill the Cult” and “One-Eyed Nation” (both with nasty and extremely worked musical arrangements, and Vogg is really a genius on guitars), the charming aggressiveness shown on “Anger Line”, the shifts on tempos and excellent work from the quartet as an unit on the massive chaos called “Earth Scar” (modern and filled with some incredible melodies, very good guitar solo and excellent vocals), and the fast insane vomit of brutality called “Never”.

Then, all that’s left to say is: forget the past, because DECAPITATED isn’t here to hear complaints and cries, but to stomp your bones flat! “Anticult” will really impress many!
