Decaying – To Cross the Line

To Cross the Line
by Riccardo Gaffuri at 05 February 2018, 5:58 PM

Coming straight from Finland, DECAYING present “To Cross The Line”, fourth release for this Scandinavian death metal outfit, out for F.D.A. Records.

What we find here is traditional Death Metal smartly laced with Doom inserts, over a general mid-tempo attitude, with some space for shattering and headbanging moments. As with Finnish tradition, DECAYING also rely on melody and variety to enhance their tracks, with a juxtaposition between eerie passages and furious outbursts. Catchy riffs and variegate drums lead to fine and layered tracks like the first “To Cross the Line” or “Crucial Factor”. “The End Justifies The Means” is a shattering and headbanging track, with crescendos, accelerations and slowing to grip on the listener. Closing track “Futile Effort” is a funeral march, one of the best rendered tracks in this release: DECAYING do their best on slower tempos.

DECAYING propose a refined release with this "To Cross The Line": although no one will scream at a miracle or a masterpiece, we can find an 8 track entertaining record, delivering heavy death blows where needed, with the added value of variety and broader influences in the mix. In 38 minutes the listener will find enough hooks to be caught on and will appreciate the internal stability in the songwriting, along with a good production and technical expertise.
