Downfall - Punishment for the Infidels

Punishment for the Infidels
by Jean-Francois Poulin at 20 July 2017, 8:19 AM

It's still pretty mind boggling how many bands are called DOWNFALL. You do a quick search on the Metal Archives there is at least 13 bands called that throughout the globe. I will never understand intellectual property and I work with lawyers and paralegals on a daily basis! DOWNFALL hail from the old country, Italy! They are comprised of four young men who started the band very young and have persevered to be able to put on their first full-length album after the release of two previous EPs in 2011 and 2014. I'd say in the least decade or so we have had the so-called New Wave of Thrash Metal, bands like MUNICIPAL WASTE, IRON REAGAN, HAVOK, and many others. So other people call it the second coming of the Thrash/Crossover movement. No matter how you say it or spell it, we have had so many good bands coming out of the genre and its ashes. ANTHRAX were the first band that made me discover the genre itself, actually, it's when they did the DRI covers that got me really interested in the genre. I made it a point to make it known to many metalheads I knew that this was really good!

Most naysayers have trouble with the genre, so are faithful to the Punk origins of the 70's and some, keep in mind, are more loyal to the early 80's Thrash Metal Scene. DRI redefined the genre and made it its own, they pretty much created their own monster. They mixed everything together, the angst of Punk with the raw emotion of Thrash Metal. It was a melting pot of styles and it really worked. No band really matched up well with but 10-12 years ago, the newer generation grew a liking to the DRI veterans and made it their goal to reshape the Crossover genre in their own image. The newer bands added better production and longer solos and made the genre even better than it was back in the day. Well, DOWNFALL fit in the mold perfectly. Even if these guys are in the early twenties, they display a maturity that is beyond their ages. Their really shaped their sound with bands like METALLICA, SLAYER and early SEPULTURA but they had those punk roots and that raw energy that made Punk a staple of the 70's generation. They are a very politically driven band and talk about the lack of proper government (and it's corrupted officials) and the injustices that people have to go through day in day out. Even though the names of the songs aren't very original, they resonate with people and each song has its own specific meaning.

They are an attention grabbing band, they pull your through and don't let you go. It's aggressive, it's intense, it's alot of fun and a great continuation of the Thrash/Crossover scene.
