Enshine – Transcending Fire Award winner

Transcending Fire
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 15 July 2021, 8:07 AM

ENSHINE is a Swedish/French Atmospheric Doom Death Metal collaboration since 2009 by Jari Lindholm and Sébastien Pierre. In exploration of new sonic territory yet retaining the trademark atmosphere of ENSHINE, this EP offers three brand new songs as well as a new take on a song from the debut album. Recorded in parallel with the work on the long-awaited upcoming third album, this release gives a glimpse into the bands current sound. The EP contains four tracks.

“Transcending Fire” leads off the EP. It begins with a slow, atmospheric entrance, with clean guitars and some keys. Lead notes lift the song into the heavens. The vocals are clean at first but turn angry and harsh. Around the half-way mark, the sound changes to more positive tones, amidst the sea of melancholy. Clean tones return as the song fades away into nothingness. “Awake in Void” opens with heavier tones, some light percussion, and thick bass guitar notes. The distorted riff reminds you of the might and power the band possesses. Harsh vocals come at you out of the date, along with some atmospheric elements. The Doomy elements are dialed up in this track…relaying utter hopelessness. Drums roll forward, along with lead guitar notes. There are just so many layers here. The song takes an angry turn towards the end.

“Ascend” is a slightly shorter track, but with no less magnificence. It begins with clean guitar tones and some keys, pulsing in the background like a caged animal, ready to strike. The mood they develop in this instrumental is as mellow and cold as outer space…giving you time to reflect on your life and wonder what good you have done for the world. It culminates with lead guitar notes, opening up in front of you, then fades away, taking your hope with it. “Constallation” closes the EP. It’s an all-acoustical guitar piece. The frail beauty of this song is wonderous. Piano notes mix in, along with audible bass dancing lightly in the background. The lead guitar notes are so delicate, and this melancholy song does give you a flicker of hope, that your future might be everything you dream it might be.

It’s been five long years since the men here released an album, and this is exactly what I needed. The EP contains four outstanding songs, crafted by the hands of seasoned and experience songwriters. It will run you through a bevy of different emotions…despair, anger and at times, just a glimmer of hope. They layering here is fantastic, and I am a sucker for their deeply depressive sound. Bravo, fellas, bravo!
