Eternal Silence – Renegades

Eternal Silence
by John Paul Romero at 23 February 2020, 4:26 PM

“Renegades” is a 2019 EP of the Italian quintet ETERNAL SILENCE. The band has been around since 2008, and since the last full-length release “Mastermind Tyranny” back in 2017, the band has issued a couple of EPs, including this one and a 2018 release called “Metamorphosis.”

Although released as an EP, “Renegades” is technically just a single with the addition of 3 live recordings of their known hits “Fighter,” “Tempesta,” and “Lucifer’s Lair.” The opening titular song is the only new track on the EP. This new song has a brief intro that quickly transcends to a powerful barrage of guitars. The noticeable thing about the vocals is that they are not like your typical symphonic metal singers with their operatic delivery. The keyboards are similarly atypical, not dominating the production but steadily delivering a rich sound from a little behind the mix. That being said though, that does not mean the song is too interesting. I find it rather weird that the drums are all over the mix, to the point that the guitars sound as though they are merely a support.

The live recordings are not so good either – while the songs are of high regard, it is the recording that is the main problem. The sound is shallow and flat. The sound of the vocals and drums are nearly dry, making the recordings not so enjoyable.

The EP would have been more enjoyable if it was released as a single without the addition of the 3 live recordings. The new song “Renegades,” while mediocre at best, does enough to capture your attention and make you move. The playtime for the song is on the average, considering its genre, which helped a lot in the effectiveness department. This album might do just well for long time fans, but it isn't really the one that you would use to introduce the band to newcomers.
