Evergrey - Torn (CD)

by Nikos Nezeritis at 24 September 2008, 12:28 PM

EVERGREY is a very well known band from Gothenburg, Sweden specializing in its own melodic/dark Metal sound, which combines elements from progressive, Power Metal and even some gothic Metal maybe, hopefully without emo-style hairdos.
I would never question their high technical skills and their ability to write catchy but not corny melodies. However, I must admit that the fact of their simplifying their structures quite obviously in the Monday Morning Apocalypse record made me a bit anxious about the way they would evolve. So, although all the characteristic EVERGREY elements are quite present I unfortunately didn't find the record as good as I hope it would be. If I were to clarify why I don't really dig it, I would have a hard time since everything seems to fall in place. However, I fear that the band seems a bit too trapped in their own cliches and this makes them quite predictable.
Of course, Torn has its moments such as When Kingdoms Fall and Fail, the sound is still fucking awesome, the guitar work is remarkable and Tom Englund is always Tom Englund. Sadly, I think this is just not enough for such a great and still promising band.
